TRP helped me a lot this past year, but I still have a few questions about certain behaviour patterns that I have now, and how I can maximise them based on the tools available to me. For context, I've been lifting 3 times a week now, worked on fashion and grooming, lost a fuck ton of weight, and am overall more confident and social. But I still have the issues below.
ALL OF MY ISSUES STEM FROM MY VOICE, OR FROM BEING TOO CONSIDERATE:
(1) I have an instinct to predict what people want/need and help them, even if they don't ask for it: After reading NMMG, when I help others now, I do it from a place of excess and without any expectation of reciprocation. I don't act "overly nice" or anything, BUT, I feel like I still over-care for everyone on a fundamental level, in a way that makes me come off as indecisive or a weirdo. Like this old dude was limping and he stopped and it seemed like he was looking at two weights that were on the ground. My instincts were to run and pick up the weights for him and be like "good luck" and then go back to my work out. The thing is though, that shit's all in my head. Like maybe he didn't want the weights. Or maybe he didn't want to be helped. So then I'm there thinking "will I feel like an ass if I ignore the dude" vs. "i can't know what someone wants, and if someone doesn't ask for help or it isn't an extreme situation, I shouldn't butt in". Or today at the gym when some dude was carrying two 40 pound weights and I was only carrying one 40 pound weight and we were both going to place the same weight on the weight rack, and because I noticed that he had two, I hesitated, and then let him put the weights and went to find the other weight rack because there was likely already supposed to be one weight there and I'd feel like an ass if he had to put one weight at a time in two different spots because my ass was only using one weight.
(2) I can assert myself and speak up, but my voice is still trash. It sounds like I'm choking or have a dry voice when I do it. For example, I was using a spot at the weight rack to work on my back, and some dude saw that I was working out and was approaching to return his weights to the spot I was holding up . I felt bad because I knew I was taking up the spot and the dude looked indecisive so I just told him in a chill way "here, give them to me" and reached for them, then put them on the ground until I finished my work out. But the way my voice sounded when I said it was like a dying horse in a sahara desert. The same voice happens when I ask someone how many sets they have and tell them if it's cool if I jump in.
(3) I'm starting to move more at my own pace, but at times, I still have an instinct to react a bit at the slightest indication that someone is trying to speak to me. For example, if my dad/sister/mom just said something (while others are around), I don't want to be a dick just in case they're addressing me and just instantly react and say "did you say anything?". I feel like what I should be doing is not assuming and waiting for them to re-assert what they're trying to say before reacting (if they were even speaking to me, that is), but it's like I have instinct to care too much about people feeling ignored. It's fucking annoying tbh. And I fight myself on if ignoring something I don't understand is the correct move and if I should assume that others are able to speak up when they need to OR if I'm being an ass for going at my own pace despite how hurt others might feel with me doing that.
(4) Even if I'm qualified to walk in somewhere, its like I assume I'll get in trouble if I don't prove or justify myself. For example, one day I was walking into the gym with a stamp (I forgot my card, so they gave me that instead) and if I wanted to, I could have just walked in to the place, unless they asked me for the stamp and THEN I could show it. Instead, I interrupt the people at the front desk and try to justify that I have the stamp, and so I'm "allowed" to go in. Or this time during a festival, I could have easily walked in, and then if someone stopped me and told me there was a cost, I could be like oh okay I'll pay. Instead, I go around asking booths to see how much it is and where I should pay, only to find out 10 mins later that it's a free festival.
(5) I find that when someone asks me something about myself or compliments me in a situation where I'm off-guard, I feel attacked and either over-justify myself or act in a way that doesn't match who I am. For example, a friend looked at me and said "what are your hobbies? you do anything this semester?". I have a few hobbies and I could have mentioned one of them, or made a sarcastic joke about doing nothing at all and living a boring life. Instead, I try to explain myself and list EVERYTHING I did like I'm trying to qualify myself and like I'm being interrogated. I FUCKING hate it. With regards to compliments, recently a high school friend who haven't seen a few months met me and complimented me on how much I changed in composure and how much more confident I looked, then I said in the weirdest fucking self-deprecating voice "thanks buddy...". I didn't even know I could speak like that. And I never even fucking use buddy in my sentences, ever. Shit's weird man.
TL;DR For a quick summary, the bolded parts.
