Nice mantra. Meditation is a key ingredient if you ask me and it should be talked about on this sub more often. It really helped me personally
[–]rkg-pua1 points 11 years ago [recovered] (17 children) | Copy Link
Mind sharing your routine, etc?
[–]LieutenantKilgore34 points 11 years ago [recovered] (13 children) | Copy Link
No problem. I've read a couple of books on meditation and buddhism, but none of that matters, really. You can dive into the whole spirituality if you want, but I keep it simple.
After a while your body will fall asleep, but your mind will be awake and you will be as close to an outer body experience as possible. Enjoy
[–]cryptonoob12313 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
in addition: your mind will always get new thoughts. notice them (but not feed them) and go back to your breath.

Exhale from your throat. It will relax you more.
[–]1dongpal 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
but then i need to open my mouth every time
[–]GluteusMaximus901 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's harder but more rewarding.

I'll just add how to work with thoughts.
Thoughts will arise. That is OK, it's expected. When you realize you are thinking instead of paying attention to your breath, go back to your breath.
That's it. No recriminations, no delving in to the thought, no emotional reactions. Just, go back to the breath.
This is basic calm-abiding meditation (shamatha). There are other things ( insight meditation aka vipassanya; body scans instead of the breath as a focus; contemplations on various topics; compassion practices like Tonglen; visualizations; etc. ) but the ability to perform calm-abiding meditation is foundational to all of them and is generally a preliminary to any of them.
A lot of people get hung up on wanting to know about and perform the other stuff I just mentioned. I believe they consider it somehow advanced, and want to feed their ego (or they have reached the point of being bored in meditation, which is normal and just fine and good to just sit with.) The Pareto principle applies here: 80% of the benefit comes from the 20% of techniques that are calm abiding.

whats your thought about awareness and staying in the present? i really love that, but i have hard time focusing on breath alone
[–]crazypsycho 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It doesn't really matter what you focus on, the breath is just very convenient and rhythmic, which also helps. Personally I like keeping my attention on my pulse and the blood pumping through my body, especially in the fingertips. There's also a 20 minute full body scan meditation I do which guides you through each part of the body.
[–]1aguy01 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's the point. Practicing deliberate focus is a muscle. When you first start meditating it's hard, but it gets easier. In the end it helps you focus on people talking, your work, whatever.
[–]LieutenantKilgore1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If anything you should try to be aware of your thoughts, on how they come and go. After enough practice you will be able to let them go at your will, which is incredibly satisfying and fullfiling. Remember, your goal is to empty your mind. Focusing on your breath is just a tool.
[–]stpauley451 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
After making this a practice and experiencing #4, you will realize you are not your mind. You are the "Spirit" beneath observing the mind.
[–]erniesmoove 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Gradually become aware of the process of breathing. Pay attention to wherever you feel the breath most clearly—either at the nostrils, or in the rising and falling your abdomen.
Allow your attention to rest in the mere sensation of breathing. (There is no need to control your breath. Just let it come and go naturally.)
Every time your mind wanders in thought, gently return it to the sensation of breathing.
[–]KnowBrainer 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Try this guided meditation. It focuses only on the breathing.
[–]Vorrei 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Download the app Headspace or Calm and start with the free trials.
Guided mediation that teach you the basics, using the technique of focusing on your on a point in your body that is effected by your breathing, my preference is the chest.
I preferred Headspace but it's personal preference. Once you do 10 days you should have it down pat, no need to subscribe.

"I will try and be in a 'flow state'."
This is the goal. This is "what is". From this, all of the other "ways of being" that you write about emerge. It is knowledge of the Flow and an awareness of it that invokes the spirit and results in every other action you mention. GREAT POST...thanks for the reminders!
[–]colombia40 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Good point. For me I have a hard time staying in that state unless I'm hitting the gym hard, eating healthy etc.
Then it's addicting. And good things happen
[–]GuidoBandito 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Good things to say and remind yourself that all of this is true. Don't just say them in your head, say them out loud. Hear yourself say it. Make it real and believe it is real.
[–]Dark397 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Also Imagine and visualise yourself acting accordingly.

"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and god dammit people like me."
[–]momomotorboat 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I was just about to say that.

I don't know where you guys live, but where I live, probably 80% of guys my age lift. They probably don't read though, so I've got that going for me.
[–]Deresetese 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
There's a difference between "lifting" and working your ass off.
[–]RickJamesBond 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True, although what these people do is lift weights. They don't generally work their asses off.

Love this post. I love positive affirmations. I set a clock every hour and whenever the alarm goes off each hour I will repeat these affirmations and truths to myself until it becomes engrained in my psyche.

Great advice. Mind sharing some podcasts worth listening?

Gemlet radio-start up has been my favorite so far. I don't normally listen to podcasts.
[–]thegorechild 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Great post, worth mentioning are specific goals/ambitions such as:
"I will bench press 225 pounds for one rep this year."
or
"I'll ask for a promotion by the end of the month. The worst they can say is no."
Again - this is a quality post for building yourself up and getting your shit together.
[–]TRP VanguardCyralea 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Specific goals are incredibly powerful. The difference between "I will be rich" and "I will have a net worth of 1 million dollars by year end" are staggering. The more specific your goals, the more specific the plan of action has to be to accomplish that goal, and subsequently the more likely you will be to achieve that success.
Great tip. ♂

Point granted.

I needed this.
I am going to happy hour tonight with a girl (g1) I have been talking to for about two weeks now. We haven't had any physical interactions yet. After I asked her she said we are having another couple join us (all four of us are really close). The other guy and girl are two of my best friends [in a relationship together] and g2 loves the prospect of me and g1. Should i be taken aback by the fact that they're coming? or see it as something positive?
[–]pxmped 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Obviously g1 and g2 are friends. Trust me, they've talked about this. It is definitely a positive thing if you are getting affirmations from g2. Try to be bros with the other guy and bounce off him for social proof to g1. Have fun with it. Be cool. Escalate if you get the chance.
[–]iiaGrer 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Run with it. It is a blessing.
[–]Deresetese 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Never done that? See it as a new experience and be open, decide afterwards.

Meditation is your greatest weapon in the 21st century. When you meditate get over the spiritual mubo jumbo and look at it for what it is, the willful unplugging. When you sit and meditate you are choosing to suppress every feeling and impulse you have. You aren't looking at your phone, you aren't cleaning your house, you aren't working, you aren't going anywhere, you aren't doing anything. You are breathing and you are existing. As you do it more you'll find that you can unplug in social situations as well. Its the ultimate alpha practice. Its the act of being your own leader

Why the shit was this removed?
[–]colombia40 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
No idea man. I've sent a message to the mods and no answer. Seemed like a lot of guys thought it was useful, I've gotten several people asking me for a copy of the post now.
[–]SwallowRP1 points 11 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
Any chance you could send it to me?

Sure mate. Still waiting on an explanation as to why it was removed.
Daily mediations/reminders
A few reminders to myself to get the day started on the good foot and have the right frame of mind. This has helped me the last few weeks, maybe it will help someone else.
I will talk to everyone. (Especially women) Displaying confidence and ease in everything that comes my way. I won't pass on opportunity to talk to a girl at the gym, cafe, or store.
I am a scarce commodity because I lift, meditate, read, and know I am the prize to be won. I train like a savage warrior and fuck like a pornstar. I may not be the top 5% yet but I am on my way.
I do not complain, gossip, or gripe. I don't speak ill of people in my workplace. When I go out with a girl she sees no bitterness towards ex gf's, bosses, and family. Friends enjoy my company because I am positive and bring a fuck ton of value to our valuable time together.
I know the value of time. I do not waste it. I will plan to be at the gym today. I m or I must work hard at everything and nothing is given to me for free. Time is ticking. Plenty of work to be done.
I will enjoy my time. Girls are fun play things, lifting makes me feel amazing, I like a good book and podcast. I'll breathe deep, not be quick to anger or resentment. I will be continue to be try and be stoic. I will be a master of my emotions so they do not interfere with my short time on this planet.
I will laugh today. I love funny shit and funny people. I won't take myself too seriously and overthink . I will try and be in a 'flow state'. Tease girls, talk shit to the boys, poke fun.
And one more time...
I am the prize, I don't chase em. I replace em

Also, I listened to that Tom Waits album and it's fucking incredible! How did I not know about how fucking awesome Tom Waits is?

Also, there are the hypnosis, subliminal, and binaural beats recordings as well. Listen to a track as you fall asleep or just have the binaural beats on in the background. But I do believe they help.
[–]erniesmoove 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I tried binaural beats with a friend 7 years ago and we both stopped using it because we started to forget things frecuently.
[–]johnnywahd 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Were you listening to the forgetfulness binaural beat? Seriously though. Other than the forgetfulness did you notice any benefits?
[–]erniesmoove 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I dont remember, but I was a kid so I was atracted to listen to the ones with the most popular names such as: marihuana, extasy, etc.
[–]llcjer 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Care to elaborate on the benefits of binaural beats?
[–]johnnywahd 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The tone in the left ear mixes with the tone in the right ear. They cancel each other out to create a new tone which stimulates specific brain activity. For me I downloaded several different kinds and listen to them at night. I think it helps slow the thoughts down allowing me to focus and fall asleep easier. I think there may be something to the science behind it. Maybe one can develop or eliminate certain personality traits through the repeated use of them.
You can read up on it here if you'd like. http://www.web-us.com/thescience.htm
Youtube has plenty of freebies by the way.

Positive affirmations are an incredibly powerful form of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Thanks for these ones.
[–]PENIS_ANUS 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thanks for sharing, OP. I've always believed that to reach an "in the zone" state, we always need to hone our mind, body, and spirit and you've demonstrated exactly that. When we are fulfilled, we radiate that magnetic "fuck yeah" aura. You have done this through lifting, reading, and meditating.
