I’m so glad others see it too. I get super annoyed when I see those “Hims” commercials or that one about weird shaped erections because I automatically think about the female equivalent and how rude, damaging, and sexist those are compared.

We need more women in advertising.

Yes and yes! I remember watching a leg wax commercial and the slogan said "Use X for pretty legs"

They could have easily used something like "Use X for Hairless legs" or "Use X for ever prettier legs"

By saying "for pretty legs" you're instantly implying normal body hair isn't normal or pretty, who even runs their marketing team??

Most of those feminine hygiene products aren't even necessary. We don't need them to keep our vagina clean. It's all a scam created by men to earn money on products that do nothing. You're not supposed to smell like flowers from your vagina, yeeesh.

So true, ads marketed to men are all about reassuring them how amazing they are and how they deserve the best because they're powerful or whatever. Ads marketed towards women are all about telling you you're an ugly piece of shit who will die alone because your body has natural functions like ageing or having periods.

We went over this to an extent in my marketing classes in undergrad. The first one isn’t a “real” problem, so you have to kind of invent it to make the consumer think they have an issue that your product can solve. The second one is an actual medical issue, so no need to invent, but definitely need to cater to a mans ego (they don’t buy as much if they don’t feel ~manly~, even for pharmaceuticals)

But I think it would be a super cool dialogue to get into about why products aimed at women/femme consumers seem to mostly address imaginary problems while men’s products are all “hey stud wanna be even more studly? Buy this!” We touched on it in class and I remember the takeaway was that most women have too much internalized misogyny and feel patronized if a product says “you’re a baddie but you’d be even more baddie with this” idk how much truth there is there though.

Woke me the eff up the first time I read the FDS post about how every bit of "self-care" pushed on us is designed to make us better consumers or more consumable ourselves. And the constant negging of us that is marketing means that our quest for self-love pits our one individual psyche against the power of a billion-dollar industry. But we feel like failures if we struggle to love ourselves. See anything wrong with this picture?

It's not the genital commercial but the 'embarrasing' or 'dirty conditions' ones that got me pissed. Diarrhoea? Woman as a main character. Hemorrhoids? Woman's condition. Passing gas? Woman. Laxatives? Woman. Incontinence, bloating, smelly breath, you name it. The message? Women are weak and disgusting, men dont fart on a regular basis and their bodily fluids smell like lavender. Luckily you won't dump Small Floppy Dick on us, this is exclusively yours pathetic little problem to be ashamed of. 😒
