The guy that wrote nearly 1/2 the new Testament was a rabid Pharisee until he became a Christian, and then he went about mandating 1000 things that Jesus never talked about or commanded.

Paul's letters and rambling theories were accepted by a bunch of early church leaders in the 3rd & 4th century AD as "inspired", and now 1600 years later, we have millions of Christians who believed those letters are literally "god's word"

The new testament mandates death to gays, condones and supports slavery and marital rape, and orders you to kill your own child if he or she curses you.

I'm not particularly religious. I got my daily dose growing up in the Bible belt. But here's a thought about that passage in Ephesians.

Three verses later, men are extolled to love their wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for it, so that it would be sanctified. The end of the passage concludes with a command for the husband to love the wife, and the wife to respect the husband. It's a great social commentary, and excluding the submission aspect of it, it's really about love and respect. A fantastic sentiment.

I especially like how the passage commands us to go against our human nature. Men want something pretty to adorn their arm, or a popular girl to increase their status -- that's not love, per se. Women want the best provider or the hottest guy -- that's not respect. The passage is a command to rein in our base intincts because it makes our lives better to do so. It's great advice, even if given under a religious perspective.

It's a shame that a lot of women focus on the first part and discount the entire message because it first mentions "submission." To me, it's mutual love, respect, and teamwork. If you love your wife, you won't mistreat her, and if you respect your husband, you mistreat him.

Or you can GYOW if you're afraid that the Modern Woman doesn't respect/won't respect/can't control herself to respect her partner.
