I've been thinking a lot recently about proposing to my Captain. I've been looking up ways to do so where it wouldn't be legally binding but we could declare our commitment to each other. I am committed to him and I believe he is committed to me. We've been together 7 years now. But then I see posts like the one below which absolutely infuriate me. It was in a thread about retiring early and the benefits and negatives of it. My Captain has been thinking about retiring. Here is the post.

"Be warned, if your wife isn't keen on you retiring early, it is probably bad for your relationship to do so. I retired at 42, and my wife soon said she lot respect for me: "I married an international high flying business owner ..." (her words) "... and now you just spend all day on your hobbies" (again her words). I should have listened to her complaints, because not long after, she left and said she has lost respect for me because (in her eyes) I had lost ambition. She has no interest in my reassurances that I had lots of ambition left, but felt I had already fullfilled the "make a successful business" ambition, so could move on to other ambitions.

That, though, is the only regret I have about early retirement. Apart from losing my wife, having all the time in the world to do whatever you want is extremely liberating. Oh, and a few months after my wife left, I got back into the dating scene, and eventually met a fantastic woman who I am still with. So, it worked out, albeit via a painful path."

A woman who proclaimed to herself, to her family, to GOD that she'd stay with her man no matter what, through thick or thin, through rich or through poor, through good and bad, left because he wasn't ambitious in the way she wanted him to be ambitious.

It wasn't like he had no ambition. But his ambition wouldn't bring her STATUS so she lost respect and attraction towards him. He even explains further in the comment thread that they actually talked about him retiring BEFORE he retired and she said it would be ok. But once he did retire she suddenly changed her mind.

This is absolutely mindboggling. They got divorced because her respect was completely lost for him. Married, "committed," for 11 years. Am I the only one freaked out about this?

So given stories like there which there are a TON of, what does it mean to commit if you know that sometime in the future you can just up and change your mind and wipe your hands free of that huge, arguably, the most important commitment you'll ever make? The most powerful promise you'll ever make?

How can I propose to my man when I know these things about what commitment often is? I took the redpill regarding a lot of aspects like what love is. Someone help me take this red pill about commitment. I'm just trying to rationalize it and it's hard.

Thanks!
