I was out together with my family, and my wife had forgotten her cell phone at home. She is a picture junkie, so she was suffering through some terrible withdrawal. She broke down at one point and asked if she could use my phone to take some pics of the kids. I said sure, opened the camera app, and handed it to her. She took the pics, then opened the gallery to see how they looked...then started scrolling through the rest of the pictures in my library. She found nothing other than kids/family snaps, and other mundane stuff (price tag for a new monitor I'm casually interested in).

Later, she says she needs to contact her mother. She asks me to do it so I open the texting app, and while I'm browsing my contacts list, wife makes a very overt effort to crane her neck and look at my contacts. I guess finding the person you're looking for and then opening a chat window is too damn suspicious as she questioned the speed at which I opened the chat window, accusing me of trying to hide something. I pulled out my phone, opened the texting app, and plopped it down in front of her. "Go ahead. Knock yourself out."

And she did. Browsed my contacts, and my other chats. Found the contact info of a few women, but they're all current or former co-workers who I haven't spoken with in ages. Chats reveal nothing out of the ordinary, maybe even a bit on the boring side. After an exhaustive search, she gives up and hands me back my phone.

...But wait Scoundrel! you must be saying. You are cheating like a motherfucker. What the hell?

Any pictures I take during or for the purpose of AP activities, I immediately save to a cloud account that is not synced to my phone, and delete from the phone. AP texts and contact info are all in a cloned version of the text app (thank you Android!), which I disable while at home. Now, if she really wanted to go digging around in my phone, she could have found the cloned app and then all the juicy AP stuff. But after exhausting my picture gallery and my texting app and finding absolutely nothing...it took the fight out of her.

So this is a friendly reminder to always be on top of your opsec. Cell phone carelessness is the number one reason people get caught. As I have said before, suspicion is your biggest enemy. If there is something suspicious about your behavior, your partner will want to start digging for the truth. If my phone hadn't been "clean" I might have refused to give it to my wife when she asked for it, or done so with a weird reaction/very reluctantly. That would have inspired her to keep looking. And without a clean(ish) phone, it wouldn't have taken her long to find something.

Imagine your partner comes up to you right now, and demands to take a look through your phone. Would you be busted instantly, or would it take some inspired digging for them to find anything? You should always be in a position where, if your partner were to suddenly want to see your phone, or perhaps they looked through it while you were sleeping or distracted, incriminating evidence isn't readily available. If you'd be busted, I invite you to stop reading right this moment, and take some steps to better protect yourself.
