for reference, i'm 21f, live in a sometimes 'old fashioned' and isolated place, but ultimately we're very modern. for this post, assume i'm talking exclusively about cis men.
so whenever i go out to eat etc with someone, they occasionally am surprised when i tell the staff we're splitting the bill either 50/50 or by what we ordered (eg for drinks as i tend to drink more). i do this because it's 2020, i was raised polite, and i have my own money. genuinely no offense intended to traditional people.
this question came up because on the last date i was on he asked if he did something wrong. he's 26m so no weird age gap. i was confused but apparently asking to split the bill makes it seem like you didn't enjoy the date, despite the fact i do this no matter how the date went. apparently it can also be emasculating, which is fair enough.
what are other people's perspectives on this?
edit: i accidentally posted too early wait for me to finish typing

Help me save money so I can go out with all these other women whose time I'll waste; I can save money for a real dinner date with a woman I'm genuinely interested in.

Well that's a bit excessive. Spending money doesn't mean she owes her pussy. You can't buy a relationship, lol

It took me awhile to warm up to the idea that it’s okay to let someone else pay for things. I’ve been on a whole lot of (dumb) dates and was used to going dutch or tit for tat. Didn’t mind it all that much since I make decent money and sometimes even made a lot more than the guys I went out with. It wasn’t until I stumbled onto FDS that it occurred to me just how much money, time, and energy I’ve wasted on men that weren’t worth it. I made it convenient to get played because I was always willing to split tabs and travel to them. I’ve gone on fewer dates after adopting FDS recommendations, but they’ve been of better quality.

Tbh that's what I realized about HVM. They want to treat you. My boyfriend literally sat me down at the beginning of the relationship when I tried to go dutch and told me that he wanted to pay and knew I wasn't a gold digger. Good men want to take care of their girlfriends and wives. He won't let you pay the same way he won't let you mow the lawn if he has nothing else to do. He wants to make you happy and make your life easier.
Even my ex fwb that refused to commit to me paid most of the time. I remember trying to pay once and he said, "Stop, I was raised right," and paid for both of us. We were 20 and 22 at the time.

I know, and I get that now. The problem is that I’m also a very giving person and I love to treat people to things too. It’s how I am with friends and family, and I had a tendency to operate that way when it came to dating as well.

I don't think it has to be either or. In a world where men weren't pieces of shit, I'd say go ahead and be generous right away! But the issue with LVM is that they take, take, take. To protect yourself, wait to see if they deserve your generosity and kindness. Once they've proved themselves (after AT LEAST four months of committed dating and HV behaviour), then you can start giving them little treats and gifts. Nothing too expensive but just little things they might like or something based off an inside joke. As you continue dating, you can scale up the cost/effort of your gifts/treats accordingly. Gift giving is my love language too and that's how I did it with my boyfriend :) Started slowly with a $10 gift based on a running joke we had and escalated from there.
You seem like a super lovely, generous person and LVMs have no issue taking advantage of that. Most men won't be deserving of your generosity or investment - let them earn it.

After you have been dating for a while and he has paid for dates then you may choose to do some thoughtful things for him. A few years back I dated someone who was very generous with dates and in other ways as well. I showed my appreciation by cooking him meals at home or buying special treats he liked. When we were in public I always let him "be the man." He really enjoyed that dynamic. Our relationship didn't last for other reasons but we did have a conversation recently and he conveyed how much he liked the things I did for him. To this day, if I need something he will come through. I wouldn't even classify him as a HVM for other reasons, but he does take pride in being a man and a provider for the women in his life, including his mother, daughters and ex-wife. Allowing him to be that man IS a way of giving to him.

I understand that, but redirect your generosity to the appropriate people - kids, your family, and YOURSELF.

I will absolutely reach for my purse. Slowly. If I’m not stopped and I end up paying for anything... there is no second date.

I do this too. Last date I was on, he’s like “o no I have it, I’d only split if I didn’t want to see you again.”

The amount of men commenting saying that they would be turned off by a woman insisting to pay is what she needs to be listening to. They KNOW they pay for women they want

I have an income that severely limits my dating pool and I still expect men to pay if they ask me out. I'm not sure why she thinks not splitting a bill means you don't have your own money and aren't polite.

I giggled at the person saying she pays the whole bill to show men she has a great income, and to find men who have a problem with that so they can be sent on their way. I hope she’s as excited to be a sugar mama to the LVM dusties she’ll attract with that maneuver.

OP is from/in Scotland (per her replies) so I’m curious about the dating culture there before make any comments or assumptions. Anyone have any insight?
[–]InayahDaneenFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points (0 children) | Copy Link
I knew someone from there and from what they told me, the dating culture is to go Dutch.
[–]raiu86FDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Splitting, to me, means "I don't like you (like that)". A guy might sleep with you even if he doesn't like you, but...yeah...no thanks.
Not FDS-approved but back in my single days if a man asked to split I did (but no further dating), and if I really didn't like him I'd offer to split.

A) I’m broke B) I’m not very interested in you C) All of the above

If I split that means I don’t like you fool.🤡
