I like to go with, "Don't worry, I remembered. Here is your sandwich, with no onions, on whole wheat, and mayo on the side :)." I like to add in things I wasn't reminded of as well, it shows I'm paying attention, and am thinking about what he wants.

Either that or I might say "thank you for reminding me". Even though I might remember already, he is trying to tell me something that is important to him, important enough to tell me more than once. By thanking him I am telling him I want to know the things that are important to him. He is not just saying it to hear himself talk, he is telling me how to make him happy. It's valuable information, so I say "thank you" for letting me know.

Or I just nod and repeat "ok, no onions got it!".

In a LTR, most communication has no purpose other than connection.

This means that when he tells you about XYZ, it's not so much because you really need to know the content of what was said. Rather, he's connecting to you by telling you something. When you say "yes, I know" you're making the conversation strictly about the content he's conveying, thus, you kill the connection.

Perhaps 5% is content and 95% is bonding. When you see it like this, you'll listen even if you heard it already because listening will enhance the connection and bond between the two of you.

Just smile at him. He knows he's told you and he knows you're attentive. Just give him a sweet smile. We boys don't always want or need an audible response. We're visual creatures.

You're prioritizing his perception of you "I want him to know that I pay attention"

Unfortunately, you're maintaining his perception of you, but disregarding his experience of you.

Essentially you're ALSO saying: "your statement was unnecessary, again" - you're giving a negative response to his bid for attention.

Every time he says something, you should respond with a "move towards" response to his bid and show genuine appreciation. Every time.

"I don't like onions on my sandwiches" -> "Great, I'll let the waiter know :)"

TLDR: you're calling out his bad memory, and sending negative emotions. With great power (a good memory) comes great responsibility (don't make others feel bad for their bad memory)

I like it when my girlfriend says things like "Of course baby! I know what my man likes, i always remember!"

Edit, My GF has always had a good understanding of what i like, she knows exactly what to say to me, always.

i'm like you with how i'm able to remember the stories he tells me and what his preferences are, lol. I usually go with "Sure, babe", "Thanks for reminding me, sweetie", or "Mm-hmm, I gotchu" when we play around, which is pretty much every day.
