It's really stupid that a lot of the comments are implying you need to keep cheering him on like a child so as not to "demasculinize" him. What ridiculous advice. Is this was RP women is? Kiss your husband's ass no matter what? You can totally talk to him about it, kindly and respectfully, and tell him you won't think any less of him if you hire someone to do the work. In a marriage you need to be able to talk about these things.

Your husband sounds like a well-meaning and energetic man which is a good thing, wayy better than being a lazy slob IMO

I can't really think of better wording than that. I've been quite a handiman around the house, but I'm pretty good at that stuff naturally (just makes sense to me - scientific-minded like you). That said, there are plenty of areas where my wife is better (drywall), and there are things I refuse to touch, like roofing/concrete.

Encourage him to do projects where the cost/benefit ratio is more acceptable.

Also, it's one thing to support your husband. It's another to coddle an inflated ego. If he sucks at that stuff, you can't buy into the delusion. Channel him into things he's more skilled at.

Your husband sounds like he suffers from the Kruger effect. I’ve been in the building industry 30 years, i see this daily and make good money from it. He has to stop because it’s cheaper in the long run to hire a professional. Not everything can be learnt on the net that’s why people have to do 4-5 years apprenticeships. Tell him to stick to what he’s good at and let others do what they are good at. Be honest, an if it hurts his ego that’s on him.

Maybe the money it costs is worth keeping a good marriage together ? Do some of those things when he’s not looking ?

It’s not worth demasculating him over it by butting in on what he thinks is his area of responsibility. Unless it is a serious issue I don’t think this warrants unsolicited advice from you. Let him break things, cost money, learn the hard way, and only be encouraging until he specifically asks you for advice. The most I would do is sweetly offer him if you can do anything to help him.

Better to spend money on learning actual skills than on useless things. Even if he's not efficient in learning.

Telling that myself each day about children :) but if he never learnt before it's really the same thing.
