Once you finish boot, you may have up to a year of school that you cannot miss followed by underways and deployments. You do not want to deal with the drama of browsing facebook at sea or in Middle East and asking who is that dude in her photos. Trust me on this one.

I was in the military for almost 10 years. I guarantee you that your relationship would have failed. I have seen it first hand with dozens of coworkers. Hometown girlfriends always end up fucking some other guy, no matter how strong a relationship the two of them had. I've seen countless guys get phone calls on deployment then throw the phone across the room and storm off.

You made the right call.

I was engaged when I enlisted. She was fucking Jody while I was deployed to the Middle East. It never works. You’re right for doing what you did brother.

I’m in the navy and had the same situation. Got into a relationship and a year later was shipping to boot. We broke it off and we were off and on for a year following that, it’s safe to say it never worked out.

Long distance shit don’t work bro. Someone else said it best, keep her in the loop as a hometown thing when you take leave. I entertain all the bitches from back home because I know when I visit I wanna fuck everyone

I don't think there's any way to make it work in the long-term short of impregnating her. Even then it's highly likely she will cheat on you, but if she carries your baby her value will be low to other men and it's likely the relationship will endure as a result because she will not have any better options.

Military guys tend to marry early. If you’re joining the service and she says she’ll understand, she probably will. Plenty of military wives have dealt with the distance in the past and there are all kind of groups for military wives. Women many times treat military men different.

Marine here, while not a sailor, I do have some experience with this. Most military relationships don't work out in the long run due to various reasons. A lot of people can't handle the stress of having no contact with their significant other for months on end. That, coupled with youth usually makes for failed relationships. I've seen it plenty of times.
