You're falsely assuming that the people who tell you that sex isn't important only believe so because they have an abundance of it, but that isn't true.
A lot of people actually don't find sex to be very important, or they grow out of thinking that it is. Some people think that sex is a nice thing but can go years without it if need be. Others are obsessed with it. People are just different in that way.
A good comparison is food. Not everyone is a "foodie". Some people actually don't really care about food that much. They find a nice dinner pleasurable, but they don't really seek out the tastiest meals. Again, people are different.
That's just one side of it. The other thing that's important to understand is that that a big part of sex is ego. People either feel validated by it, or they obsess over not having enough of it.
Once you stop assuming that others have an abundance of sex and once you learn to separate sex from your ego, you'll realize that you don't need it quite as much as you thought you did.

I think the food is a good example. While my partner does enjoy good food, he basically eats to survive. If I don't cook, he eats peanut butter lol
[–]DesperateTraffic3164 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
He only eats to survive because he has the ability to choose whether he prioritizes food or not- he knows he could get it at any time. Put your boyfriend on 1000 calories a day in sub saharan Africa working a physical labor job and see how quickly his perspective on food changes.
[–]flapperfemmefataleew gender roles 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Still doesn't change the other problem with the analogy: no one will die from lack of sex.
[–]DesperateTraffic3164 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nope. You don't eat food because you're worried about dying, you eat it because your body has a strong physiological reaction to operating on low calories, which is an evolutionary mechanism to prevent us from dying. Sex is literally the exact same for many people, and stronger for men, exnay on dying. We are biologically compelled to reproduce, like all animals.
[–]svenshapiro 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
He only eats to survive because he has the ability to choose whether he prioritizes food or not-
Wrong. The reason why he's not a foodie is because he's not a foodie.
He doesn't get as big of a dopamine hit eating food as other people do.
He's not craving it because he's not craving it.
The same goes for sex. Some people really get a kick out of it, and others don't. It's a fact of life.
[–]DesperateTraffic3164 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
No one is talking about being a foodie except you. Sex is a biological urge for nearly 100% of men (and people) in the same way food is.
[–]svenshapiro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
No one is talking about being a foodie except you.
Yes, because I'm the one who used it as an analogy. What's your point?
Sex is a biological urge for nearly 100% of men (and people) in the same way food is.
Yes, and that's why food is a great analogy in order to illustrate that people place different levels of importance on both food and sex.
[–]DesperateTraffic3164 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Uh, no. OP describes her boyfriend as 'barely eating' or eating peanut butter. My point is that if you place him in different circumstances outside a first world country, his perspective on food would change massively. He would be eating anything, at any opportunity because A.) he has vastly less selection and B.) the consequences for a single missed meal are much higher when your caloric output is high.
Do you think starving children in Africa are fucking foodie's or something? lol what the fuck
No shit, that's the point of the post. People with excess can do whatever they want, whether it's becoming a foodie or barely eating at all. You have the choice to do that, because a super market is right down the street. The starving African does not have those options and places a much higher level importance on food.
This thread is literally: Americans struggle to understand first world problems.
[–]svenshapiro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Uh, no. OP describes her boyfriend as 'barely eating' or eating peanut butter.
Where did she say that her boyfriend was "barely eating"?
She just made a joke that he doesn't seek out food for pleasure to the point where she has to make nice meals for him, which perfectly illustrates my point about the incentives that drive us to do certain things.
My point is that if you place him in different circumstances outside a first world country, his perspective on food would change massively. He would be eating anything, at any opportunity because A.) he has vastly less selection and B.) the consequences for a single missed meal are much higher when your caloric output is high.
Yes, but that comparison makes zero sense, because people can self-stimulate in order to relieve the negative physical effects of not having sex. This means that you can live a normal life and have little interest in sex, as long as you self-stimulate from time to time in order to avoid physical issues.
The equivalent to this would be someone who eats for function (like the boyfriend we've been discussing who eats for sustenance) rather than someone who doesn't eat at all.
No? I never said this.
No shit, that's the point of the post. People with excess can do whatever they want, whether it's becoming a foodie or barely eating at all. You have the choice to do that, because a super market is right down the street. The starving African does not have those options.
You're completely missing the point. It's dopamine that drives what we do, not scarcity mentality. Dopamine is what drives all creatures to do or not do what they do or don't do.
Eating releases dopamine. Sex releases dopamine. Alcohol releases dopamine.
The thing that you stubbornly refuse to acknowledge is that people vary wildly in how much dopamine they get from doing various things, which is why some people are fine not having much sex, regardless of whether they can or can't get access to it.
[–]DesperateTraffic3164 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
She literally said if she didn't cook he'd only eat peanut butter.
Yes, but that comparison makes zero sense, because people can self-stimulate in order to relieve the negative physical effects of not having sex
It makes complete sense. Both food and sex are biological compulsions based on million year old instincts. Not having sex has a psychological effect on men that goes far beyond the physical effects of a need to self relief - it is quite literally a signal your genes will not be passed on which is lineage death, and the worst outcome imaginable from an evolutionary perspective.
This isn't hard to understand:
With an abundance of food comes choice, and the choice to be a foodie or not.
With an abundance of sex comes choice, and the choice to be a thot or not.
You're completely missing the point. It's dopamine that drives what we do, not scarcity mentality. Dopamine is what drives all creatures to do or not do what they do. Eating releases dopamine. Sex releases dopamine. Alcohol releases dopamine.
Why do you think our brain releases dopamine? Just because it can? Dopamine is a psychological reward for actions that increase our likelihood to survive. Human instinct compels us to complete these behaviors, the dopamine is simply the pleasure response our bodies provide to reinforce good behavior.
which is why some people are fine not having much sex, regardless of whether they can or can't get access to it.
Nope. You are bordering anti science.
[–]svenshapiro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Ok, so she didn't actually say "barely eating" as you quoted.
And yes, like I said, she made a joke about the fact that he doesn't seek out food for pleasure. That doesn't mean that he'd literally starve if she didn't cook for him, or whatever strange point you're trying to make.
None of what you just said here refutes my point that people are capable of self-stimulating in order to relieve the actual scientifically-proven negative physical effects of not having sex.
Show me a study that indicates that not having sex is somehow akin to starving, please.
This isn't hard to understand: With an abundance of food comes choice, and the choice to be a foodie or not. With an abundance of sex comes choice, and the choice to be a thot or not.
Yes, but that still doesn't change the fact that people vary wildly in how little or much they care about pursuing various pleasures, even when they have the same opportunities to do so.
Yes, but that doesn't mean that there isn't biological diversity among humans that causes variance in behaviors, drives and motivations.
How?
[–]Razumnyy 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What is your definition of important? People can survive without sex, but not without food. If your definition of important is it being necessary, then it is less important than food.
Why does talking about famous people cheating, or some people wanting to have sex with famous people mean sex is important? Just talking about or wanting to do something may not necessarily mean it is important.
Some people would leave a relationship if they didn’t have sex enough, some wouldn’t care and find masturbation to be just as satisfying. Some people might care if their partner had lots of sexual partners before them, some might not. Some may be willing to have casual sex, some may want to save it for marriage. Some may be fine with open relationships. The importance depends on the person.

Sex is overrated, coming from a man who has never had it. I'm sure its great but the level of obsession some guys have with it (i.e. you) is a neurosis that gets worse the more you fuel it with 'sex is like air' analogies and fantasies of being chad. I got two dudes hitting on me in my reddit dms because they thought I was a woman (I'm not). They were perfectly civil but they had absolutely nothing to go on except a couple rambling posts on ppd. I don't understand that level of thirst, and I expect a lot of women are in the same boat (though again I AM NOT A WOMAN) even if they aren't getting any. Though I will concede that:
-the reason I am not totally obsessed with sex might be the same reason I haven't had any: my appearance screams hormone disorder.
-I am technically mgtow/volcel because a couple girls hit on me and I shot them down. The first girl might have been messing with me (she did flash me but who knows) but the second was definitely sincere and turning her down was painful. She was mentally ill, but I'm mentally ill and unattractive so its not like I deserved better.

Some people don’t care about sex. Some people don’t even like it. If it’s important to you, find someone who also finds sex important
[–]flapperfemmefataleew gender roles 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Speaking as someone who has had REALLY good sex, no it's not important to me, and I haven't had sex on over a year I think.
Unless you want kids, sex is just for orgasms. Whether someone else gives me one, or I give one to myself, it's still an orgasm.
You compared it to food, so think of it like a craving for mac and cheese. I could order from a restaurant, or I could make it at home. While one may be better than the other, both satisfy the craving.
EDIT: I'd also add that if you genuinely cannot live without sex, you have some issues you need to tackle.
[–]Chefbraidy 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Anybody that says sex isn't important or doesn't matter should stick by their word and have no issues, with their spouse or partner sleeping with someone else since it's no big deal. Anyone that pretends that one of the most fundamental, important and principled biological desires is not important is not worth listening to.
I'm fine with it, provided I have the same allowance. What would bother me is unequal standards.
[–]closeraway16 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link
Sex is primal. Not much choice but to want it.
it's easy for everyone to aqcuire it. And if they can't, then they must be doing something wrong.
Pretty much describes most women and attractive men.
A bit like a happy person telling a depressed person to just ”get over it.” Unable to form empathy, just remaining tone deaf, unaware of what’s outside of their own human experience.
A bit like telling the citizens of a poor country to “stop being poor“ while never bothering to visit the country to learn the challenges. It must be their “attitude” that causes their poverty.
Its what you get in a society of narcissism.

Don't forget average men, because normal people can get laid if they want to.

90% of men can get paid if they want, just gotta aim low ……looooww
[–]svenshapiro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Most normal men can get laid if they have their shit in order.
This means:
Having a modicum of social intelligence, including picking up on social cues.
Knowing how to socialize like a normal person and how to behave appropriately in social settings.
Being empathic of others' perspectives.
Knowing how to both have fun and be fun.
Not being visibly riddled with frustrations, insecurities or anger.
Not being argumentative, disagreeable or annoying.
Taking care of themselves, their homes and their appearance.
Having normal hobbies that are easy for people to relate to and ask questions about.
Not being greedy, selfish or constantly expecting things in return.
Actually genuinely caring about other people and their well-being.
The most common problem I've seen seen with frustrated and angry men who can't find women is that they refuse to acknowledge that they're below-average and need personal development.
So, the average guy can indeed get laid quite easily. The problem is usually that the men who complain about not getting laid are, in fact, way below average and really need to become well-rounded people before they start trying to get laid.
[–]rivetcitymayor -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
I disagree with the reasoning to be honest, I think the majority of men complaining they can’t get laid just don’t have it in them to dumpster dive, I know a lot of guys with the mentality of “ pussy is pussy “ and those guys are usually the ones with high body counts
[–]svenshapiro 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I’m talking about relatively easy non relationship sex

Average guys don't need to dumpster dive. Below-average guys who think they're average do.
Sex is easy to get for an average person who has their shit together.

So show me your idea of the below average guy
[–]svenshapiro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Someone who doesn't do all the things that I listed.
[–]mimblezimble -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The true biological importance of sex is that we use it to reproduce from generation to generation.
In that context, the need for recurring sexual tension relief is an important biological tool to encourage a man keep going back to a woman and provide her with money for her household.
If men did not need sexual tension relief as much, we would not find it worthwhile to fund a woman's household.
In those circumstances, the brood could find itself starved of the cash needed to survive. This kind of outcome is often devastating in terms of long-term survival of the brood.
Therefore, a wife who refuses sex to her husband behaves in violation of the rules of our biological programming.

I can't speak to casual sex, as I have never participated in such and have no interest in such. Within the context of a relationship, sex has many levels of importance. It'll be different for different couples and different life stages. Important for a variety of reasons, some more crucial than others. Sex is definitely of equal importance to a romantic relationship as all the other relationship factors. UNLESS someone is asexual, which once again, I cannot really speak to.
Source: my father's relationships all the way from youth to old age, and my intimate relationship from virgin to long(ish)-time wife. I get the feeling plenty of other people my age have not closely seen long-term sexual relationships play out the way I have seen it as a MC white, religious family person.

If sex is not important. Then how come women have such high bodycounts? How come famous men are praised for having had "sex" with so many groupies? As they say, "sex sells", so apperantly it's considered very important in society to be sexually active.
[–]flapperfemmefataleew gender roles 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Society as a whole also plays up home ownership, car ownership, etc. And I know many people who don't care much about either, aside from having basic needs met (needs...not wants...sex is a want).

“If playing video games isn’t important why do some people play video games so much? Why are some gamers praised for their gaming achievements? A lot of video games are sold each year, so apparently they are important to our society.”
You could replace this with lots of things that people like. Some people enjoying something doesn’t give you an indication of how important it is overall, just that those people may find it important.
