I am a normally a very happy person and smile all of the time and my voice tends to reflect that. It is higher pitched and "girly" (for lack of a better word).

I don't use "upspeak" or have any weird verbal inflections.

The only time my voice changes to a deeper, more serious tone is when I am upset or angry.

Sometimes people I know in my personal life or at work make fun of the way I speak and I just don't get what's so funny about my voice. I try to let the comments just roll off but they tend to come in clumps. For long periods of time no one will mention anything about my voice and then for a few days in a row I will get comment after comment about how "girlish" my voice is.

I have a large vocabulary, I speak intelligently, I don't use "like" very often except when it is a literal usage of the word. What gives?

I often wonder if it is because I am so tall so my girlish voice is somewhat of a stark contrast? Additionally, I live in the south but don't have much of a southern accent because my parents are from New York. I've had people assume I was from up North multiple times. I wonder if my unusual accent has anything to do with it?

Comments have been from both men and women. My SO doesn't seem to take issue with it so that by itself makes me less concerned but the comments from others do wear on me. People sometimes assume I am at least 5 years younger than I am (I am 24) because of my voice.

Your thoughts? Anyone else have a high pitched, girly voice? Is it something I should bother to work on?
