Do not get too much invested in this relationship until you've met IRL. It smarts when you meet your online fantasy dude and, pffft, no chemistry! It happens. BTDT myself! I don't think his profession sounds like a dealbreaker! In fact it sounds a lot like trading stock options or being a freelance data science consultant, both jobs held by friends of mine, who themselves are normal, sweet, traditional guys.

You guys sound like you'd be an amazing couple. Although the risk exists that this relationship won't feel the same in-person, I think if you can talk for hours on the phone, that's seriously promising.

Gambling is an issue when it's an addiction. In this case, it would only be an issue if something happens and he continues to bid money he has not or his luck runs out and he refuses to do any other job but professional gambling.

I'd say go for it. My fiancé and I met long-distance through Facebook and now we're engaged so :p it's not always useless. Giving up on your career is a bit riskier. Before leaving it all to pursue a long distance relationship you need to really know the guy as to not gamble with your life. Why can't he move to you since his job doesn't seem to require him to stay at one place (aka he can work from wherever there's internet)?

Hi there! I apologize for the lengthy post, but I'm excited to share my perspective on this situation.

I've been dating a high stakes poker player for almost 2 years. He's been a professional gambler for 12 years now, and has been very successful in his line of work. I always refer to his gambling as "going to work".

My bf has worked with financial advisors and investment firms since the beginning of his career. Your (potential) man owning a home is a great sign!

I'm sure your man wants to prove his success by sending you screenshots, but I feel it's important to keep finances private if you aren't seriously involved. I had a direct conversation with my bf and told him I didn't want any details as far as numbers go....it's really none of my business. Try not to Google him if winnings are posted online!

We got serious pretty quickly and moved in together a year after the start of our relationship. We spoke about long term goals (kids, marriage) before doing so and he shared details of his financial situation overall.

we discussed things such as credit scores and taxes. Does your man accurately report his earnings, is he going to get audited by the irs and penalized? Is he paying into a retirement fund? Does he keep large sums of cash at the house?

Does he engage in any illegal sports betting? I know two associates of my bf serving time in federal prison for this, scary stuff!

Does your man gloat over winnings and sulk when he loses? Huge red flags for me. Him being jealous because of male attention is natural, but if it turns into a serious issue I'd be concerned that he lets emotion call the shots. Not a great trait in the gambling world.

In the long run he'll have wins and losses. I personally treat every day like my bf if losing. I'd hate for my attitude to be sour on a day he loses 50k.

Lastly, how does he treat you? Is he kind? Is he humble? What is his relationship like with his family? My bfs family is SO proud of him and they maintain close relationships. Being labeled a gold digger comes with the territory, work hard to prove his loved ones wrong and ignore the people who don't matter. Always be grateful for the things he does for you, my bf has been used by women, friends and family and it's incredibly sad.

You say you'd be happy giving it up to be with him which is a nice sentiment and proves you're serious about him but I wouldn't be so quick to throw in the towel and start planning until you properly date and establish a long term relationship.

Also, there's nothing that says he can't compromise and come to you if his job is easily done at home. That's the sort of planning that comes with a serious relationship and time together!

There are a few red flags to be aware of here. Feeling the need to qualify yourself with earnings suggests a lack of intrinsic confidence - ie "without my money i'm nothing".

No, rarely leaving your computer or TV room makes you a pro gambler because there's not much else you can do with your life. Oh, except the extremely lucrative career of "professional gamer..." If he really needed to "capitalize on breaking news" he could do it with his phone and a well setup RSS feed. Warren Buffet doesn't need to be in a room with a computer and TV all the time, but this guy does?

You're putting all your money on the idea that the egg came before the chicken. Unless he is literally dripping in money and swag, he's just a basement dwelling loser.

Oh, so instead of gambling to release feel-good endorphins and chase a high, he does it as his only means to an income and is totally dependent on the results. You're right, that is totally somehow a better situation to be in. It's not like making money is the main addiction driving the world, and your job is your main vehicle for making money. The only thing worse than a gambling addiction is a gambling dependency, which is what you get from being a professional gambler. lmao

My brother actually makes his living as a professional poker player, so I have some idea of what this entails.

Your guy seems to be doing this all very responsibly. The stastical approach is a good sign - a successful pro gambler only puts forward money when he knows the odds are in his favor. Paying for everything up front is also crucial. Gambling leads to a highly variable income, and the more money you have available, the more successful you can be. So budgeting is a bit different than for a normal career. Either he can afford to buy something outright with plenty of money to spare, or he can't afford it at all. It sounds like he's really good about that, which is promising for his long term financial stability, but it also means his lifestyle will probably always be more modest than you'd expect from his winnings.

Professional gambling is a terrible career for meeting women one might get serious about. So it doesn't surprise me that he might be a bit insecure about that.

It sounds like you get along well! I'd say give it a shot. I'd be more worried about the difference in location and how well your chemistry translates to real life than the gambling, to be honest.

I'm a pro gambler, it's a job. There is no fun, thrill or rush when it's job. It's as boring and mundane as just anything. A good thing about this industry is it can be done from anywhere, there is nothing tying one down. He could move and visit quite easily while still working.

If he's legit then it's fine, some of the smartest, most driven and talented people alive do it. But also, some of the scummiest, degenerate, despicable con artists do too. Flashing winnings throws of warning signals to me. Stories of guys having a few lucky big wins deciding to go pro and then losing everything is common place in this industry.

Anyway, don't get ahead of yourself. It's one thing to go on a holiday and spend some time with someone. That way you get a trip at the worst. No point planning weddings or permanent moves until you've at least met.

So in short, I don't think it should be a dealbreaker. The risks are higher, but the rewards can be too.

Have you actually met him in person? Have you spent an extended period of time with him?

Most guys don't send prospective girlfriend's copies of their paychecks or direct deposits, so if he really treats gambling like a job, why does he send you screen shots of his winnings? Does he tell you how much he loses, too?

Why can't he leave the house? People who work in the stock market (which is essentially professional gambling) still manage to have active social lives, stay on top of the news and make money in their sleep.

If you ask me he sounds like a catch. He's obviously a talented guy who has made an unconventional living. It's still early days and you don't have to get too invested. Just meet him and see where things go.
