P&G acquired Gillette for $57 billion almost 14 years ago to the day this year. What seemed to be a brilliant move, buying a high-margin, market-dominant brand, this soured quickly as grooming habits changed and competition intensified. The biggest threat came from Dollar Shave Club, a direct-to-consumer start-up with great appeal for Millennials. It ships its customers a month worth of razors for just $1, a deep discount tin comparison to Gillette’s price.

In the new commercial from Grey, Gillette, a company which made billions of dollars from men for over a century, disparages every one of those very same men. The brand clumsily attempts to contemporize its long-lasting slogan, “The Best a Man Can Get”, by featuring sinister males bullying and harassing – an action which Gillette describes as "toxic” masculinity. The ad is amateurishly stereotypical and mostly offers a caricature of masculinity.

That's it, Gillette is trying to get even with those men buying from the dollar club! :-)

No, seriously, they 100% deserve the reaction they are getting. This ad is nothing but feminism painting all men as evil, again.

My wife had just purchased a 20-pack of Gillette cartridges for $42 from Costco a week before the cursed ad was released. I'll be using those up for about the next year and a half. I won't be purchasing more and we're considering a major change to our preferred brands, moving away from P&G products entirely.

For my wife and I, a P&G boycott would mean no more:

Tide Pods
Downy dryer sheets
Downy liquid fabric softener
Bounty paper towels
Charmin Ultra-Strong (I'm open to good alternatives on this one...)
Charmin wet wipes
Puffs facial tissues (looking at a box on my desk right now)
Always/Tampax "supplies"
Old Spice deodorant
Cascade dishwasher pods
Dawn dish soap
Febreze spray
Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (love those things too...)
Comet cleaning powder
Braun beard trimmers
Gillette razors/gels, of course
Venus razors/gels
Pepto Bismol liquid
Vicks vaporizer, rub, and inhaler
Oral-B electric toothbrush heads
Scope mouthwash

All-in, that's probably $2,000 to $3,000 per year.

I really hope they relent and retract this shit. I'm really not looking forward to finding a new brand of asswipe and I like my little Vicks inhaler for when my nose isn't cooperating.

It never has been. They are overpriced, environmentally unfriendly garbage made in sweatshop conditions. For a clean shave there is nothing wrong with a classic safety razor and for a quick daily shave get electric from a reputable brand that respects their employees.

I've been shaving with Dorco blades for years once I realized I could get more than a year's worth of blade refills for the same price as 8 blades from Gillette.

I wonder how much they're playing on the idea that a lot of free bad publicity is better than no publicity.

I've heard the word "Gilette" more times in the past 10 days than I have in the past 10 years. The fiasco will blow over quickly, as these things always do, and in the meantime P&G will have put their brand name into tens of millions of ears for nothing more than the commercial production costs.

They're cashing in on a moral panic. That's what I hate about this. They don't give a flying fuck about masculinity, 'toxic' or otherwise, and are just exploiting the status quo to line their pockets.

Regardless of how a guy feels about their message or their products, no man is going to take cues on social decorum from a fucking razor blade company.

It's not forbes but a personnal blog host by forbes.com. He summarizes well the problems of the ad but he is not a journalist and as far as i know his article was not published in the newspaper.
