The other 3 are not women. What a mystery

[–]Vance87 64 points65 points66 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

They are grey beings of some sort. Not sure what they are really.

Basically NPCs

They could be these guys.

Reminds me of that old Onion news story where the American weather men are acting all relieved that a category 5 hurricane didn't hit Texas but instead completely devastated that big land mass south of Texas.

They're probably feral kitties or something.

51% of the population make up 25% of the homeless.

49% of the population make up 75% of the homeless.

Oh, there's an epidemic, all right, an epidemic of dishonest manipulation of statistics for political gain.

[–]boywithumbrella 23 points24 points25 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The statistics aren't even bring manipulated here, this is just blatant misunderstanding of basic facts and wilful ignorance.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Framing is manipulation. Choosing to highlight a group that is clearly under represented in the ranks of the homeless rather than a group that is clearly over represented isn't particularly honest.

[–]baserace 61 points62 points63 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Utterly frightening how blind and empathyless to men you'd have to be to create and print this with a straight face.

[–]ThirdTurnip 27 points28 points29 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The implication that men don't matter is horrifying. But the person who made this might not be blind or empathy-less. Just cynical enough to realise that women get all the sympathy and willing to take advantage of that for a good cause.

There was a campaign recently in Australia just for that.

There was an "epidemic" of women being homeless and they need funding for shelters.

...this is despite a growing male homelessness issue because new laws made it so homeless shelters, which are unisex, have to take in women from domestic violence shelters first when they get crowded.

[–]ISOanexplanation 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

and suddenly homelessness matters.

[–]boringcarpets 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Male Disposability In A Nut Shell.

Why do we resist giving help to homeless men? In part because we don’t understand how our pressure on men to support families often forces men to take transient jobs that are but a step away from homelessness (the death-of-a-salesman jobs, the migrant worker jobs…) and in part because we respond differently to men who fail ...

[–]Vanriel 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So the other three are men...and surprise surprise no one actually gives a damn. It is disheartening seeing stuff like this. I just can't understand why some people are so willingly blind when presented with information that is so completely and utterly obviously stupid.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The other three, of course, simply do not matter.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

End the gender homeless gap!

What is this?

[–]EgoandDesire 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, tumblrinaction is where toucans go to die

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only 25% of homeless people are women? How is that a bad thing? I'm surprised it's that many, considering that women have more options available to them, and a lot of employers would hire women over men.

[–]vhisic 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

4 in 4 Homeless people are people. What does their gender matter?

[–]dangrullon87 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck those majority three.

[–]RedBigMan 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I bet Women are considered 'homeless' when they move in to some guys place and get stuck with the couch. Men are only conidered homeless when they're on the street begging for money.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No offense dude.. But I kinda think you should show the whole article.. Removing a segment like that makes it hard for me to gather context.

[–]yeahHedid[S] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

there was no mention of gender in the entire article other than point out the % which is why this stood out even more.

http://www.metronews.ca/news/vancouver/2016/05/31/vancouver-homelessness-at-record-levels-2016-count.html

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There is no mention of gender because...

The 2016 Homeless Count – a 24-hour snapshot conducted by 450 volunteers March 9 – identified 1,847 people living either on the streets of Vancouver (539) or in its shelters (1,308).

They would necessarily have to break those figures down. I'd be willing to bet the house on there being less than 23% women sleeping on the streets and that the proportion of aboriginal men and vets sleeping rough is significantly higher.

The subheading for the picture...

Pedestrians walk beside homeless people on Granville St. in downtown Vancouver

Also doesn't mention that those are men they are walking around - again something a betting man wouldn't have a problem placing a bet on.

The 90% male homelessness is sleeping on the streets... not being in part of relatively comfortable shelters, which can be actual houses. I see this article/source as attempting to chip away at that stat and not reporting the full facts. Hence the memorable infographic.

[–]deaftoexcuses 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I saw an article a awhile ago, where a feminist implied that a few women couch surfing, was essentially a more serious problem than the multitudes of men literally sleeping in the streets. Shows you who the real sexists are. Here it is: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/analysis/Women-The-hidden-homeless-295363481.html

Edit: I use noscript in my browser, which let me read the article directly. The site in question, forces you to sign up to read the article. And interestingly now has a disclaimer over it, which I didn't notice before. If you use noscript or something similar and type: Women the hidden homeless Winnipeg Free Press, into Google it should show and be directly accessible without making an account. Or click the link. I think I originally found this article in the Toronto Star online but can't find a link to that.

[–]ThugOfWar 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The other three must be non-binary gender queer or something, everyone knows the patriarchy wouldn't abandoned it's own. Nothing less than C.E.O. for us men.

[+]FelidiaFetherbottom -14 points-13 points-12 points 10 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

But, that story was about the homeless problem in general. And my take on the graphic was just to point out one of the several groups that were affected, one that people may not expect to be that high.

Edit: the victim complex on this sub seems to be pretty high. In the article, there was one stat that mentioned the rate of homeless women (also mentioned the rate of aboriginal homeless, but no outcry there), and this infographic simply visualized it differentlydifferently. Bunch of god damn cry babies on this sub

[–]angry_cabbie 23 points24 points25 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Which itself suggests people expect men to be the majority of homeless, and nobody cares.

[–]Vance87 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Give women credit, they are trying to even it out. Last i heard it was like 90% male homelessness.

[+]FelidiaFetherbottom -14 points-13 points-12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Nobody cares" is much different than "Nobody is surprised"

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ask yourself this question and really think about the answer

If 1 in 4 were men , would the headline be the same OR would it be 3 in 4 homeless are women.

[–]FelidiaFetherbottom -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess that depends. When I picture a homeless person, I picture a guy...i did not know women made up 23% of that population, so the graphic makes sense. Besides, it's just a demonstration of what was said in the article. Whenever there's an infographic that mentions something from an article, they tend to use the info directly.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why wouldn't people expect at least 25% of homeless people to be women?

[–]FelidiaFetherbottom -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm not saying people don't...I'm saying it's not obvious to everyone and apparently the people at the paper had the idea that not many people think about the stat

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not obvious to everyone and not many people think about the fact that 25% of homeless people are women.

Is that notable because it's so many or so few?

[–]FelidiaFetherbottom 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So many
