So the existence of a physical fitness test that shows that a police officer can deal with physical confrontations, chases, etc. Is "sexist".

Ridiculous.

[–]m1serablist 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I believe burglars who run away from fat cops in a discriminatory speed, that being too fast for them to wobble over and catch the criminals, should also be charged for discrimination. if they ever get caught anyway.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Stop running away or I'll arrest you for discrimination. /waddle

[–]pnw_diver 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. Athletic criminals are, by definition, misogynists.

"The incident is similar to a growing number of cases in which females in physically-strenuous jobs demand both special treatment and to be treated equal to their male counterparts at the same time."

Basically, they want a good paying job without doing the fitness levels required to perform the job successfully.

A case of entitled women who want their cake and eat it too if you ask me. They don't necessarily have to be feminists to want preferential treatment.

An interesting aside. The wall (the one recruits have to climb) in the obstacle course at the NSW (Australia) Police Academy was lowered many years ago. I always assumed it was to accommodate women, but I found out from someone who used to work there that it was lowered because the higher wall was considered discriminatory to people of Asian (Chinese etc) descent. They are (or at the least were) significantly shorter on average. I'm not sure if the Police lost a court case or if they did it voluntarily to avoid one.

I know it's not particularly relevant, but I found it interesting when I heard it and thought others might too.

[–]Folsomdsf 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

strangely, if the population fo shorter people is increasing enough that this is a problem for a significant portion of applicants, it also changes the population outside at large as well. I could see if your overall height decreases across a population that this may be reasonable to reflect the great population shift.

Not actually applicable in this case, but hey, food for thought.

[–]user1492 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do short people make shorter walls?

[–]websnwigs 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seems like the purpose of a wall is to keep people out, isnt it?

[–]BelievesInGod 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ironic really, i mean, they aren't just going to make shorter fence for people just so Asian cops can jump them lol.

[+]redditsaidfreddit -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's probably of greater benefit to the police force to field officers who are visibly representative of those they policing - thereby engendering a greater degree of trust and cooperation - than it is to have officers who are able to scale walls a few inches higher than they might otherwise.

[–]OhNoNowWhat 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Um. Are you serious? How does this have any upvotes? Must be all the progressive lurkers...

The whole of MRM in this thread is complaining about women not being able to meet the standards set by the the police force. The current stance is that there should be no special treatment for them and we should not lower the bar for them. For the record, I completely agree with this.

u/blackcatsmatter just pointed out a situation where a police force lowered the bar for Asians and you supported it.

Let's try changing just a few words here:

An interesting aside. The wall (the one recruits have to climb) in the obstacle course at the NSW (Australia) Police Academy was lowered many years ago. I found out from someone who used to work there that it was lowered because the higher wall was considered discriminatory to people of Asian (Chinese etc) descent. women. They are (or at the least were) significantly shorter on average. I'm not sure if the Police lost a court case or if they did it voluntarily to avoid one.

Your reply, word for word now:

It's probably of greater benefit to the police force to field officers who are visibly representative of those they policing - thereby engendering a greater degree of trust and cooperation - than it is to have officers who are able to scale walls a few inches higher than they might otherwise.

Do you see the problem here? I immediately assumed you were a troll but the number of upvotes had me concerned for this subreddit.

[–]redditsaidfreddit -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No troll; if a police force with a more representative racial (or sexual/religious/whatever) mix is better able to do its job and that relaxing some of the job requirements is a necessary compromise to achieve this then they would be silly to not at least weigh up the pros and cons of doing so.

[–]OhNoNowWhat 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

More representative? What does ethnic representation have to do with effective policing? Is a Mexican drug dealer going to resist arrest less if the officer is also Mexican?

If we were talking about sportscasters or talking heads on CNN or the racial demographic of characters in sitcoms on Comedy Central, you would have a point. You might even have a point when it comes to city council demographics or people on a jury. In police work, though? No fucking way.

The ethnicity of a police officer in no way has an effect on his ability to do his job. Can he wrestle a violent criminal to the ground? Can he mediate disputes between spouses during a domestic violence call?

Let’s take a look at what kind of duties a police officer might have.

From the UK:

Typical work activities

The work of a police officer is both challenging and diverse. A variety of specialist roles are >available to constables who have completed their probationary period and their Diploma in >Police Service Leadership and Management (Scotland), their Higher Education Certificate in >Policing (Northern Ireland), or their Diploma in Policing (England and Wales). On entry, and during initial training, activities are likely to include: * working in partnership with communities, liaising with community groups and individuals;

  • providing a visible presence to deter crime and reassure the community;

  • conducting patrol duties on foot, by car and bicycle;

  • developing community knowledge to identify individuals and locations at risk of being involved in crime;

  • responding to calls and requests from the public to assist at incidents;

  • keeping the peace at public meetings, social events, processions, trade disputes or strikes;

  • diffusing potentially volatile situations with due regard for the safety of all involved;

  • acting with sensitivity when dealing with situations such as delivering news of a sudden death to a family or when dealing with sexual crimes;

  • conducting initial investigations, gathering evidence, taking statements and complying with relevant legal requirements;

  • interviewing suspects, victims and witnesses in accordance with relevant legislation;

  • conducting arrests with due regard for the human rights, security and health and safety of detained individuals, members of the public, colleagues and self;

  • preparing crime reports and presenting case files to senior officers and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)  (England and Wales) the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) (Scotland), or the Public Prosecution Service for Northern Ireland (PPS) ;

  • attending and giving evidence in court and at other hearings;

  • completing administrative procedures;

  • submitting internal crime reports and criminal intelligence reports;

  • investigating and taking action on information received from members of the public;

  • gathering, recording and analysing intelligence to achieve community safety and crime reduction objectives and providing crime prevention advice;

  • taking direction on specific duties from senior colleagues;

  • attending road-related incidents including collision scenes, vehicle check points and traffic offences;

  • enforcing road traffic legislation and issuing fixed penalties for relevant offences;

  • dealing with lost or found property.

Here is one from the US:

I. Duties & Responsibilities of Police Officers

The class description for the position of Police Officer, as defined by the Municipal Fire & Police Civil Service Board (rev. 7-10-75), is hereby reproduced in its entirety:

A. Nature Of Work

This is general and varied duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work involves the responsibility for performing routine police assignments that are received from police officers of superior rank. Work normally consists of checking of parking meters for violations, routine patrol, preliminary investigation and traffic regulation, and investigation duties in a designated area on an assigned shift which involve an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Employees may receive special assignments which call upon specialized abilities and knowledge usually acquired through experience as a uniformed officer. In addition, employees of the class may be required to assist other personnel of the police department in conducting interrogations, searches, and related duties as assigned, involving female prisoners or suspects, as well as in escorting females and juveniles to and from designated points. Assignments and general and special instructions are received from a superior officer who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspection, and discussion.

B. Illustrative Examples Of Work

(Any one position of this class may not include all duties included, nor do listed examples include all duties that may be found in positions of this class.)

  • Patrols a designated area of the city on foot, on a motorcycle, or in a radio cruiser to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of a crime, and to enforce traffic and parking regulations.

  • Answers calls and complaints involving fire, automobile accidents, robberies and other misdemeanors and felonies.

  • At scene of crime administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses, and makes arrests; testifies as a witness in court.

  • Interviews persons with complaints and inquiries and attempts to make the proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities.

  • Checks parking meters for overtime parking violations and issues traffic tickets; directs traffic at intersections; participates in escorting funerals and house-movers.

  • Conducts accident investigations providing first-aid for injured, taking safeguards to prevent further accidents; interviews principals and witnesses, taking written statements from drivers, witnesses; examines vehicles and roadways, observing traffic control devices and obstruction to view; takes necessary street measurements; clears the scene of obstructions and wreckage.

  • Escorts prisoners to and from court; insures that prisoners are properly guarded; supervises trustees washing cars and cleaning buildings.

  • Acts as custodian of personal property and evidence being held for court presentation; maintains records of property, evidence, and automobiles held or impounded.

  • When assigned, is responsible for reloading ammunition at the police training academy.

  • When assigned, participates in training activities at the police training academy; may instruct or establish curriculum for instructional purposes.

  • When assigned, investigates crimes; searches for and preserves evidence; questions suspects and witnesses; checks pawn shops; maintains surveillance over persons and places suspected of vice operations.

  • Assists in interrogation and investigations involving female prisoners and juveniles.

  • Searches female prisoners and assists police officers in situations involving female persons.

  • Conducts female prisoners and juveniles to and from jail to courtroom, hospitals, or elsewhere.

  • Performs other related police duties as assigned.

C. Necessary Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.

  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper course of action to be taken.

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to write and speak effectively.

  • Ability to develop skill in the use and care of firearms.

  • Good general intelligence and emotional stability.

  • Willingness to cooperate with officials and other police officers.

  • Willingness to learn and increase skill in police work.

Nowhere in either of those lists do I see anything that has anything to do with ethnicity or ability to relate to a specific race. Go peddle your progressive feel-good bullshit somewhere else. No one is buying it here.

[–]redditsaidfreddit -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

None of the duties listed above seem to require the ability to climb over an obstacle course wall of any given height. If anything, this reinforces the point that prevented otherwise perfectly suitable people from becoming police officers.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We want equality as long as that means men has to lower their standards to accommodate us

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's funny... the PD where I work has an easier test for women in all categories. I don't think a criminal would tone it down just because a cop is a female. And then they get upset when many male officers don't respect female officers as their male counterparts. Maybe because you got special treatment?

[–]hatebosses 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I say let them in. The criminals will show them exactly why there's a physical fitness test.

[–]eletheros 28 points29 points30 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Except when they're partnered "for safety", making their (his) life less safe than it would be when partnered with somebody who passed the test.

[–]hatebosses 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Good point. Unfortunately, there's no real way to deal with these types. They will whine until they get what they want and politicians side with those who help them get in or rather, stay in power. Good police are quitting and the whole system is well on it's way to collapse. The realistic option is to give them what they want, and start over elsewhere. They'll die off like lemmings jumping off a cliff and we'll come back in once it's all settled.

The current populous that is changing things for the worse "feels" things are getting better. Those dangers they block out with self applied blinders will assist them to their end and I for one am all to happy to watch them do it. I can't be the only one who enjoys an arrogant moron failing.

There is too much momentum behind the direction western society has chosen. If you think you can change it, I'll be the guy on the sidelines eating popcorn cheering as you try to stop that steam roller from going over the cliff.

Find people worth saving and help them protect themselves. The rest are just wastefully eating up resources better people could be using.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I love watching videos of police scuffles when there's a male and female partnership. The guy will roll around and the female cop just doesn't do anything. Or they'll pile on after the criminal is practically subdued. Very rarely do I see a female cop actually do anything beneficial in such situations. There was even a video a couple of years ago from NYPD (I believe) where there was a struggle between a male cop and a criminal, and the female cop just stood there.

[–]Sigbi 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

you should cross post this to world news or other big sub. I have a feeling other outside mensrights would agree fairly strongly.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The story is already on 10 other subreddits. It was on twox but the mods deleted the thread.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I like the way the department handled it. I'm not sure they should have put them back on duty. But the training program makes it clear that they aren't going to compromise their standards.

[–]thalos3D 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wants "equality," but also special exemptions.

If they didn't have double standards they wouldn't have any standards at all.

[–]Swinship 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i should get into crime...

[–]Keiichi81 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I actually don't care if departments want to lower standards to accommodate women as long as the standards are lowered equally for both genders. It's when there's a higher standard for men and a lower standard for women that my blood starts to boil.

[–]websnwigs 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Standards exist for a reason. We want cops to be at their best, not just "diverse".

[–]Keiichi81 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The question is whether those standards are necessary. Is being able to mantle over a 9 ft wall really necessary to the job performance of an officer in practical situations, or is it simply an arbitrary restriction that disqualifies a number of people who would otherwise be excellent officers who could mantle an 8ft wall but can't quite manage the 9 ft?

If the standard is lowered for everyone it can and should be because that standard is unrealistically high to the point that it's damaging rather than improving the capabilities of the unit. When you lower a standard specifically for one gender while telling the other that they still need to meet the old standard, that's when it becomes a matter of discrimination.

[–]websnwigs 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Please. If a lot of people can meet those standards, and a lot do, otherwise we wouldn't have cops, then they are perfectly fine. If a few people can't, they have to find something else they're good at. Its very simple.

[–]Keiichi81 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So would you argue that current police standards in the US are fine as is? Because a great people in and outside of the US would argue that the competency, reliability and trustworthiness of the police is severely lacking these days. Perhaps physical standards need to take a backseat to psychological standards?

[–]websnwigs 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure. Those standards should be high as well. Being a cop is a very stressful job, after all.

[–]andyf123 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I personally would want the people protecting my city to be in the best condition they can be in. I'm sure the possibility of them having to scale a 9 foot wall sometime in their career is a rather high depending on what city the department is in. The point is I'd rather over prepare the officers if I have to than under prepare them, they need to be ready for what they face and that means pushing their limits.

Who is fat-shaming? Perhaps you should read the article instead of just looking at the picture and jumping to conclusions?

Perhaps I am insinuating that the shape they are in has more relevance to them failing the physical?
