The scariest thing about having a son (he's 7) is that I look at him and think he has the intelligence, drive and ability to accept crazy amounts of risk. He's exactly the kid who could grow up to do great things and seriously impact the world.

Or he'll end up in prison.

As a parent, it keeps me up at night trying to figure out how to guide him more to the 'great things' side.

I had a Maths teacher in 1995 tell us openly that '1 girl in this class equals 3 of you males'. Called her out on it, received Cs from then on regardless of results. This happens all the time.

When I was in HS, I pointed out to my geography teacher how well the continents fit together, and instead of being encouraged to study the potential for plate tectonics, I was essentially told I was full of shit, it couldn't be true...really, really disappointing.

But I was a little inwardly smug when plate tectonics was announced, heh.

My mother is a math/science teacher and actually believes this. She's always told us since we were kids that women/girls are better. She also believes that her hitting my dad as hard as she can is fine because she can't really hurt him (all the while absolutely destroying him emotionally/mentally for good measure).

Thinking back, I had a substitute teacher that let the girls go out to recess immediately while forcing the boys to stay inside until they did certain exercises (squats, pushups etc). And this was only ten years ago.

Start climbing the chain of command. Tell your parents and approach the principal. If you aren't apologized to and the teacher disciplined, go to the school board. If still nothing, go to the State Board, etc etc....do NOT let this shit pass.

The irony is that biased grading pushed me away from literature (my passion) towards the STEMs (where bias has limited effect on grades.) Without shitty english teachers who would mark me down for merely being male, I would have likely pursued a degree/job that doesnt pay well.

BTW, I am fairly confident of the gender bias b/c boys would do SIGNIFICANTLY worse on practice AP tests with our teachers graders, but do about the same on the actual AP tests where gender is unknown to the grader.

The sexes balance out to about the same average IQ, but for different reasons.

Whether if women like to hear it or not, they are the baseline in our reproductive habits. Women are the controlled variable for genetic evolution. So, most women tend to be very average in the IQ range. However, men are responsible for being the experimental variable in our genetic evolution. Most men are actually not average. In fact, most men are either smart or stupid (using those terms lightly here). About half of men have IQs above average and half below. This assures that the strongest win (because in reproduction, men compete women select, the women don't need variables because they don't compete (again, using terms lightly)).

You know how most people remember the bad? Well imagine that but amplified to a point where roughly half of female to male interactions are with people of lesser intelligence, they will fixate on this, as all humans do, while ignoring the other half. That is why this notion continues.

Her statement was most likely about the early school years where, in general, girls do indeed perform better than boys at school except in mathematics. It's unfortunate that she couldn't properly answer your point and instead scolded you and your friends.

I agree with the statement "men and women are equally intelligent", but it's important to know that there are many types of intelligence. Men exceed at some and women as well, but we're not exactly the same.

She would have been wrong. IIRC, women tend to cluster slightly right of the bell curve, but men have a higher standard deviation. The average woman is smarter than the average man, while men have more geniuses and more idiots.

Of course you did. The proper lesson to learn is that you don't get to call the teacher out during class without there being repercussions. It's got nothing to do with who's right or wrong, it's got everything to do with who is in charge and who isn't.

To challenge a teacher, you wait until AFTER they have turned in their grades, THEN you call them out publicly or get in contact with the principal or school board.
