I just love how even though women are the majority on campuses, get grants and bursaries just for being female, and are earning the most degrees, somehow there's a major conspiracy to discriminate against women in college admissions.

That takes an incredibly flexible mind to come to that conclusion.

I'm flatly against affirmative action, no matter who it "benefits," and I hotly contest that it benefits anyone. The problems that are causing men to do poorly in school compared to women are not going to be solved by letting them into academic environments they are not prepared for. To the extent that men are being discriminated against in terms of grading (and I strongly doubt that this is true across the board, although it probably is a legitimate problem in certain areas), teachers need to be made aware of their biases via awareness-raising campaigns—the same kind that worked to combat grading biases against women. To the extent that men are exposed to societal and cultural factors that pressure them to ignore school in favor of other things (e.g. sports, making money via crime, etc), we ought to do more to protect them and remind them that a good education will get you more pussy in the long run than selling drugs will in the short run.† To the extent that there is some inherent bias among college admissions boards against men, again, raising awareness and getting that changed is the solution—not artificially changing college demographics by giving one gender an unfair advantage over the other in order to "counterbalance" unrelated societal prejudices. Affirmative action hasn't worked for Blacks, and it won't work for men.

† Please, don't think I'm implying here that men are ultimately only motivated by pussy; if you can't recognize a bit of off-color wit, you have bigger problems the scope of this comment can address.

This isn't really isn't an argument about discrimination, but about the appropriate weight given to high school grades versus entrance exams. Men outscore women at entrance exams. Women get better high school grades than men. There has been a shift to valuing entrance exams over high school grades, which is seen as discrimination against women. There are non-gender balance reasons to do this. Entrance exams offer an objective way to compare students, while high school in the United States varies substantially in quality and level of competition. What might be considered an A in some schools can actually be an F in others, the range is that wide in the U.S. Universities have recognized this, and are weighing things differently in order to compensate.

The other issue is that there is substantial evidence that boys are being discriminated against in high school grading. There are multiple studies that suggest that teachers exhibit a same-sex bias during grading. Since about 2/3 of high school teachers are female, boys are more adversely affected.

This is sickening. Personally, I believe admission should be purely merit based in either case. But it's a free country, and if it wasn't discrimination when they did it for women, it's not when they do it for men.

And last year, the Washington Post analyzed admissions data for 128 colleges and universities with admissions rates under 35 percent. They found that 64 of them admitted men at a higher rate than women.

Clearly the author didn't do very well in math. 64 is half of 128. So if half of colleges favor men, then the other half favor women...

I like how thin the attempt to distinguish this from affirmative action is.

There are 2 reasons given why it's different. One is that it's a "quota." Well, so is affirmative action! It's also an "open secret" that affirmative action on race in many colleges amounts to a quota for various races. And Title IX of course works as a quota on things like athletic participation, nobody at Vox denigrates that, they're all about Title IX.

Second is "critical mass". The Supreme Court's justification for affirmative action isn't the same as liberals'. Liberals lke affirmative action to right past wrongs, and to balance discrimination against certain groups, and the Supreme Court only allows it for "diversity" (which "critical mass" is a part of). The fact that it's allowed under "diversity" doesn't mean the colleges themselves support it because of diversity.

Furthermore, if women are 25% of STEM majors - isn't that a critical mass too? Or if women were 40% of college students generally? Hell, why isn't 5% of students being black a critical mass? In any of those situations, you'd better believe Vox would call for affirmative action for the disadvantaged groups.

I think it is discrimination against women, but then I also think that affirmative action is discrimination as well. I'd like to let people go where they want to/are qualified to go, not muddle shit up with gender and race quotas.

For the Nth time "number of college degrees" is a moronic metric.

if every woman on earth suddenly decided to get a college degree in basket weaving It means absolutely fuck all.

all a degree of itself shows is obedience and commitment, the degree discipline shows your actual value intellect and competencey.

Unless your degree has an objective measure of quality/value then your degree is not an indicator of competency.

people who use women outnumbering men in number of college degrees is like claiming more women hold homoeopathy qualifications then men, unless homoeopathy is your business it means fuck all to the real world
