Surprise! People with more emotional support have lower suicide rates. How the author twisted this claim to make it sound like being lonely is some sort of privilege is beyond me.

Even for sociology, this is some blatant pseudo-science. The number of assumptions made and factors ignored are ridiculous. Besides, hasn't anyone taught them that correlation doesn't indicate causation?

Maybe there is a little truth in this theory, but there are several data points that contradict it.

First Nations/Native Americans have the highest rates of suicide. Does this reflect greater wealth and freedom?

The countries with the highest suicide rates are Greenland, Lithuania, South Korea, Guyana and Kazakhstan. Are these countries particularly wealthy and free?

Asian Americans seem to have somewhat low suicide rates. Yet Asian Americans are wealthier than other groups. How can that be explained?

Overall, it seems like a poorly supported theory.

What the hell,Fucking Sociology that's why I'm taking literature as my minor. It's based more in rational reasoning and honest perspective. Psychology is nearly as bad now..Cognitive,evolutionary,neuropsychology and old school stuff still has some worthwhile insights but most of psychologynow is mealy PC indecisive bullshit..

You cant just extrapolate a correlation found on religion into gender because they are totally different things. Theres a common identity in religion whereas in gender, there really isnt other than what organ you have between your legs. Religion is an ideology, gender is not. Durkheim must be rolling in his grave right now.
