Yes. I had a very amicable divorce with very low levels of conflict. The lawyer was there to write up what we agreed on and to make sure that I wasn’t signing off on anything that went against my best interests. Money well spent.

This is a rule of life, if you feel compelled to ask the quesiton 'do I need an attorney' the answer is always yes.

Yes, even divorce attorney's hire attorneys when they get divorced. If you were just doing mediation and she didn't have an attorney, that would be one thing. But if she has one I would absolutely get one

Quickly, Yes, you need a lawyer.

I agree with 80% of what her lawyer wrote up.

Once you push back on the 20% you have an issue with she will consider it game on because right now you're rolling over on things.

I do want to ask for more of the equity in our home, 50/50 and she offered about 50k less then I think I should get.

You're not asking here - At the end of the day you're due 50% of the equity weather she likes it or not. Hire your own appraiser. They work for you and will go high if you're being paid out. She would prob get her own and they would go low. Youll meet in the middle. I bought out my home and my ex wanted more than was expected and the $500 i paid for an appraisal saved me about $30k. In your situation I bet you'll find the home is worth more than you're already expecting and that 50k shortage is probably more like a $80-100k shortage at the end of the day.

If she wants the house she HAS to pay you your 50% (AND remove you from the loan!!) and if she cannot make that happen, you sell and split the proceeds.

At this point it is just business. If either of you let emotion make decisions you'll screw yourself.

Don't f*ck around. Get a lawyer. And get a good one.

BUT, if you really feel this way you can use this to negotiate a low retainer and keep your on-going costs low.

Yes. Always get a a lawyer. Always! We agreed with 95% but she was manipulative so I knew I needed the backup. It was because of the lawyer behind me that she couldn’t pull anything - which she woulda. Those last 20% will be hard without one. So worth it.

100% get a lawyer. She may be working with you on good terms NOW but more often than not they’ll rack you at the last minute. Do your research however. Make sure the lawyer you go with has YOUR interests and wants as a priority. Don’t let them just skate by and do the minimum. You’re paying this person thousands of dollars to work FOR you MAKE THEM WORK!
