I'm in the process of divorcing a SAHM. I have always been the sole income provider for our family and make a good income. Our children range from kindergarten to 4th grade ages. Many dads on this forum say they have 50/50 custody and I'm looking for some input into how you actually make it work. I would be shooting for a one week on one week off custody schedule but am having trouble wrapping my mind around how to even do that.

I live in a large (1million plus population) city in the eastern US. I make a good living, live in the suburbs, and have a 45 minute commute to my office in the city center. My kids bus picks them up at 745am. I think it's feasible for me to see them on the bus in the morning then head out and get to my desk around 830ish. What do you dads do about drop off in the afternoon? Bus drops them off at 3...I would have to leave my office at 215 at the latest to ensure I was at home when they got there. Do your kids do after school activities? Is family helping you out? Am I missing something here? This model of me working and having a SAHM is all I've ever known. What do two parents with office jobs even do to make it work?

I don't think my boss would be receptive to me asking to leave at 2pm for half the days every month. We do some remote work and my boss is a nice guy but I'm pretty sure he would say no to that. My schedule can also be erratic. I had to fly to the west coast last week for two days for a site visit and was given 4 days notice about the project. Today I made several trips to project sites in the region and covered over 300 miles. Tomorrow and Thursday I'm in the office from 8 to 5. Friday I'm back in the field and the hours are going to be unpredictable...

I'm at a loss....do you guys work straight office jobs with flexible hours and remote work possibilities? Is family helping you? Do your kids do after school programs? Do you purely work from home? How do I make it work?
