Hypothesis 1 isn't saying much because humans are terrible at delayed gratification. 2 is pretty telling though. Most men aren't out specifically looking for virgins and the ones that are tend to be virgins themselves.

The irony too is just how much young women are sexualized, coerced, and pressured into sexual acts, and yet simultaneously punished for being "sexually active" by the very same people who pressured them into sex in the first place. Surely, if these men valued a woman's virginity as much as they claim they do, wouldn't there be far greater emphasis on respecting women's boundaries, discouraging sexual pressure, and holding other men accountable for pursuing sex at every opportunity? Instead, these arguments create an impossible standard in which women are expected to be 'sexually available' (at least enough to satisfy men's desires), yet sexually restrained enough to avoid any criticism. A woman is condemned for being a virgin, shamed for being inexperienced, pressured if she says no and then devalued if she says yes (but never beforehand, only after the fact). The contradiction is blatantly obvious! The issue has never been about respecting women as equals or valuing a woman's purity, it is about policing women's sexuality in whatever way is convenient to them.

These RP talking points are nothing more than nonsensical, misogynistic drivel. They rely on a double standard that celebrates male sexual experience while condemning a woman's sexual experience, despite the fact that a male's heterosexual experience is (obviously) acquired through women. So the logic simply does not withstand. If a culture encourages men to pursue as many sexual partners as possible, while simultaneously expecting women to remain 'virgins'- who are men supposed to be fucking? It is promoting two mutually incompatible expectations. The end result is not 'moral consistency', but a system in which women are criticized no matter what choice they make.

H1. In conservative cultures and points in history female virginity was expected/valued and women waited until marriage. Also tended to marry young.

Eg many religions, purity culture, highly patriarchal cultures

Religion perspective is that sex out of marriage is a sin, women should be pure, etc

Historically was often linked to wanting to being sure of parentage of children, as property and titles passed down from father to son, no dna tests back then.

It it also tightly linked to men’s control of women. A woman belongs to her father until passed to her husband.

However in practice there was still rape and incest in these cultures that would be covered up to avoid destroying a women’s prospects at marriage. So it may not be the case they were necessarily virgins but it was the outwardly presenting as such. Huge pressure for women to appear “pure” and abide by society.

Also in these cultures it’s not uncommon that if a wife is widowed she may remarry. If her dead husband had a brother he would often marry her to keep the family line intact.

Yet most of us are living in modern western societies where women are independent, educated, free, have their own career and income, their own choices. They have access to birth control and condoms. They don’t get married until later in life, and have usually already been in a serious relationship for years prior to that - and multiple failed relationships. Each relationship is a trial that could lead to marriage if it works out. So why wouldn’t they have sex? Even if they waited till marriage, they could divorce. So there is little point to not having sex when you want it.

h2 The numbers never add up in RP: men can’t both be out having casual sex with women and there be plenty of “virgins” to fulfil that demand.

In modern western world average person gets married at about 30yrs after being in a long term relationship for 5 years. I don’t think there are many virgin weddings happening regardless of so called “value”.

Ultimately if you are going to share a life with someone why on earth would virginity matter (when that disappears the minute you have sex)?

RP only state they want virgins because of their own insecurities - an inexperienced woman won’t be able to tell they are a terrible lover because they won’t know any different. They imagine a virgin will be more malleable to them and their bad behaviour. They think they will have more control over an inexperienced woman.

If female virginity were truly one of the most valuable traits to the vast majority of men, I would expect many more women to strategically preserve it.

Women are tired of trying to pretend their value lies in something so debated. We are people, not prizes.

If female virginity is truly one of the most valued traits by most men, why doesn't that preference seem to appear consistently in either women's behavior or in the mate choices of men who supposedly have the most options?

Therein lies the problem. Only women are told to perserve their virginity. Men are told to discard theirs. And then somehow they turn it around- if you won't sleep with me within three dates, you're not attracted to me (at least the language is changing from "you don't love me") and the relationship is off. Doesn't matter that that particular woman may need emotional security for sex.

Same game, different language and rules.

The virgin thing is a left over behavior from high school, and I get it. It’s weird to walk past someone in the halls who was with your girlfriend, but once you get out into the real world, it’s a petty thing to worry about if at all.
