Quite often, whenever the topic of men's vulnerability comes up, the comments section is riddled with accounts of men saying that once they have opened up to the women in their lives, be it family, friends or the ones they were in a relationship with (sometimes even after being asked to "open up" many times before), said women lost their respect/attraction(in the case of romantic relationships) towards them because they started looking "weak" in their eyes. This has, of course, led to these men (which, judging by the amount of such accounts, is a large portion) to not trust the women in their lives with their thoughts, feelings and emotions. And guess where that leads them? The Red Pill, since, as we know, not showing vulnerability of any kind in front of a woman is one of it's tenets.
Now, as a man, this came as a shock to me, because I, for one, never experienced or witnessed this. Hell, the first time I experienced the loss of a loved one (my grandpa) I was 16 and after we said our last goodbye I hugged my mom and started crying in the crook of her neck because it was too much. That happened in the middle of the church with EVERYONE around and EVERYONE saw. Not one family member (BIG family too), male or female, has ever said anything about it or changed their attitude towards me/lost respect for me after I displayed such vulnerability.
Another time, my best friend cried in front of me, the boys and his girlfriend, while recounting some traumatic things from his childhood. We, of course, didn't belittle him or ever held it against him that he cried, his GF is still his GF some 3 years later, and he has cried some other times in front of her after that too. They're still going strong.
I asked another, older friend of mine with much more life experience about this and he also said that not showing vulnerability in a relationship was codswallop and just another example of BS internet propaganda. He was also talking from experience, not just saying it, and he is currently in a fulfilling relationship with an amazing woman who, guess what, he did cry in front of.
I read on this even more (of course, pretty much everything I've found has been anecdotal, there aren't many studies around this), and I have found accounts from men talking about how they DID open up to their partners and nothing had changed or it had even brought them closer, and accounts from women who have said that their partners opened up and they found it endearing and meaningful that they were trusted enough by their men to be shown such vulnerability.
Now, of course, I do not want to invalidate anyone's feelings, especially men considering the problem with men's mental health in these times, but I can't help but wonder whether that's a case of confirmation bias or a really real, really common problem, with the "good stories" being just the minority. It is only natural that a post about such a topic would be full of accounts of the negative experiences, the same way a post about a girl being played by a fuckboy would be full of accounts of other girls who had been played by fuckboys and not about girls being in healthy and loving relationships with awesome men, or a post about someone who had been cheated on would be full of other stories from other people who also got cheated on, and so on and so forth, you get the gist.
The fact that evolutionary psychology is often cited in such discussions ("Females are biologically hardwired to be repulsed by males showing vulnerability because it means that they're weak and thus would be unable to care and provide for them and their offspring"), but the (more or less numerous) accounts of such things not happening coupled with the fact that evo psych is a pretty wonky science makes me skeptical in regards to this claim... but I still can't help but wonder. Hell, this problem has been one of the things that have led me to being red pilled, even though I was only in it for a few months tops, but all those bad stories about it going wrong still have me on edge sometimes... hence this post. I've lived with the notion that vulnerability in a relationship is one of the most important aspects, and having this belief challenged and being told that in order to prosper in a relationship with a woman I must hide my true self out of fear of her leaving? That's pretty shitty and stressful.
So, what do you think? Is it a case of confirmation bias? A real problem, with the positive accounts being in the minority (<50%) and the bad accounts the majority (>50%)? A case of correlation != causation, and many important bits of information missing? Discuss.
