Adding onto the previous post on violence/abuse/rape against women in movies/series, I was so disgusted by two of Jennifer Lawrence's movies. Red Sparrow and Mother! Can we pls talk about how f***ed up these movies were? I no longer watch 18 rated films

Unfortunately, I've seen too many J-Law movies. Red Sparrow is tripe, honestly. Not everyone can buy into that kind of narrative, that she plays a former Russian ballerina turned spy but wait a minute... She's that kind of spy, basically prostituting herself for a good 2 hours.

While Mother! Is supposed to be a metaphor for "mother Earth/ planet Earth". To me, Mother! is a horror/ gore film through and through. A young actress like Jennifer, coupled with Javier Bardem who looks like a brute all through the movie... It's distressing to see. But unlike the other movie, this one at least hides under a thick blanket of artsy tricks.

But let's not forget that Jennifer has almost always been paired with male actors twice her age. She's been given roles that target experienced women who've been through life and have a story to tell. She was 20 something when she played in the eponymous movie Joy, depicting a 30+ woman with preschool kids. The message is that Hollywood want only young actresses. 20 something actresses play mothers of 10 year olds while 30+ actresses already go for the grandmother's role. That's fucked up.

i always just go and read the entire plot of a film before seeing it, to make sure there's no sexual violence. sucks it's so common in horror

The “metaphors” (can they be called metaphors when they’re so fucking obvious?) of mother! were very tired and boring. By the time it got to the misogynistic violence, all I could think was can’t he think of something more original or at least a more interesting and less objectifying way of portraying the ideas he is conveying? The director was dating Lawrence at the time, if I remember correctly. The boob shots were entirely uncalled for and really distracted from the message.

Mother was absolutely unwatchable. I honestly think it was somehow attempting to make art out of using and discarding women in horrific ways.

Sure people said it had some interpretation about our planet and humanity's negative effects on nature, but nah, Earth movies kinda need Earth in them.

I feel sad for Jennifer, I remember watching an interview of hers years ago where she talked about her dreams of being a director and producer. Her agents probably convinced her in many ways that doing these films would be better for her. You can tell shes not invested. The acting isnt very good.
