This applies too if you saw the red flags, knew they were red flags, and continued on because you thought that was what you deserved and all you could get. That's not who you are anymore.

This is true in my case I had also held out hope that maybe I was wrong and just being overly-cautious due to my history with toxic assholes.
No, I was right and I am very reluctant to give these fucksticks that much credit for my evolution.

Absolutely 100%. Your gut was screaming that he wasn’t treating you right and often times we ignore it. Now we know that we must always trust our gut, because it is always right.

The Gut is powerhouse of the woman. I used to mistake my gut feelings for *butterflies*. Now I know that was just anxiety masquerading as excitement because I had my rose colored glasses on.

I agree with the sentiment in this message but recently somewhere on social media, maybe it was this sub, I saw that men take credit for making women become better versions of themselves.
So maybe we could rephrase this belief. Men weren’t sent by anybody to make us wiser or to make a new woman out of us.
A man took advantage of us and we, with our own strength, intelligence and of our own accord, pulled ourselves back together and grew from the experience.

Yea I don’t like that mentality either for the reasons you’ve stated.
Also, it makes it seem as if the abused should feel grateful to have been bestowed such a “blessing” or that it’s their fault for needing such a lesson.

honestly, i am completely turned off from men. 99% of them are physically ugly and the other 1% good looking ones are straight up assholes. i can't get good sex from them, i can't get any emotional connection from them and mentally they are boring af. so what's the point?!?!

Thank you for posting this. I just left a dusty man I was in a relationship with on and off for two years and I feel like I've gone through this before. The lessons seem to actually be sticking at the moment, but I owe a lot of that to FDS and you ladies who post and comment here. I was feeling down on myself about it because I'm 27 and my older sister has been in a committed relationship with her fiance for 14 years, they have a home, dogs, and twins.. so it's hard not to compare. But your post and you are right, this is a lesson I needed.
Edit to clarify: my sister may sound like a pick me with that long of a relationship and not being married, but they both don't feel the need to get married because her fiancé has been a part of our family since they were 18 (I was 13.) Maybe she is a pick me, but I just don't want anyone to attack her lol. She is happy and doing great. They may have a small ceremony, but only if she wants it. He is taking our last name and the twins have it already.

If by “it” you mean a very creative list of ways to murder....

Disagree. He was “sent” to hurt you, but you were brave and got out.
Of course, the idea that all his bad treatment is for your own good perfectly mirrors patriarchal abrahamic “god.”

Unfortunately it's one of those lessons we shouldn't have to learn, but we have to to try and protect ourselves.
