Do not let men with bad intentions play devil's advocate with you. Most of the time, they're hiding behind a facade of being "rational" to cover for their sexist, ill-informed opinions. Call them out everytime!

The Black Lives Matter movement and people’s reactions to it has made me notice this a lot more recently. As a black woman, I understand that race issues are complex, and I’m usually more than happy to debate/discuss with someone who doesn’t necessarily agree with me. However, I find that most people wanting to “have a discussion” are just arguing in extremely bad faith. I had to block a school friend earlier today on Facebook because I’ve had enough of it. To me, both sides of an argument should come with an open mind. Anything less is a waste of everyone’s time.

People who argue points they claim not to even necessarily believe just to argue about them are the worst human beings, and being in a relationship with someone who constantly needs to debate and criticize your opinions "to play devils advocate" is an abusive nightmare

A "man" I work with called my boss fat (not in exactly those words but the implication was clear. He asked her what size lab coat she needed and then laughed, saying a medium would be too tight across her shoulders).

When his (male) supervisor was asked to address it, the supervisor's response was, "To play devil's advocate, he is kind of socially awkward and probably didn't realize how rude it sounded."

I kid you not when I was a freshman in college, I told my ex about the documentary India's Daughter and how upsetting it was. He decided to play devil's advocate as we were walking into a busy grocery store, claiming that in her country she should've known 8pm was too late to be going on a bus... So the rape/assault could be expected. What?! I was so embarrassed to even be near him. Unfortunately, I had no self esteem from his abuse, so dated him for another year. I did break up with him eventually though for disrespecting me. Better late than never.

I actually had a first phone call with a man from match.com last night who behaved like this. This grown man had such a huge chip on his shoulder. After exchanging greetings, he started telling how he doesn’t need online dating 🙄 , that he’s not a stereotypical [insert ethnicity] man, blah blah. It was almost funny he really thought he sounded smart. Then for no reason, he said “let me ask you a question “ and invented a scenario where if I’m in a bar having a martini after a hard day at work and I see a good looking man, Will I approach him or no?

Note that this question came from nowhere - It’s the first 15 mins of talking to him. I’ve told him nothing about my approach to dating, nothing about my standards or experiences. It’s all a projection. So I responded that I found the scenario weirdly contrived, that I don’t even drink, and I’m confused why he is asking what I’d do. Ended the call shortly after. I’m thinking he wanted me to start offering a defense for chivalry, so he could be condescending and try to “teach” me. I refuse to give such people the satisfaction.
