Another social media site has rampant catfishing attempts even aiming for married women. Generally imaginary military or surgeons (stealing photos from elsewhere), but my personal favorite was when they mixed it up a bit. A redneck man complete with camo clothing, a shotgun rack in the back of his pickup, named (first name) BECKY. I about died laughing.

This happens a lot in Asia. The scammers like to pretend to be white or half white men from the West and target Asian women hoping to have a western, white/half white SO. They usually pretend to be Americans in the navy who are currently stationed in Asia, pilots (prior to the COVID-19 pandemic), or businessmen. Some pretend to be Asian men with western citizenship. They'll usually claim they urgently need a lot of money or they had sent you a present but it got confiscated by the post office of some country and you'll need to pay a large amount to get it.

Edit: I just read your article with Google Translate. I guess what happened to the poor woman is the opposite of what happens in Asia given how she got scammed by a guy who claimed to be in Malaysia. I'm kind of surprised this happened though. I can understand why some Asian women would take the risk to "date" some white guy they've met online who lives abroad given how some of them put whiteness on a pedestal, want to marry for western citizenship, and there's a lack of single white men looking for love as opposed to casual sex in Asia. I assume the average Dutch woman is less likely to fantasise about living with a lover in Asia.
