Apps are built to make you as addicted as possible. Do you have any other hobbies? Try to find groups that give you better quality social satisfaction than socials.

Maybe Instead of deleting your account, delete the app. I deleted my account and honestly a few years later I regretted it because I had a big following and am out of touch with some cool people.

None of this sounds silly to me because we are in the same age range but it will sound silly to older people.

You likely will feel lonely and lost, but that’s what you need to push through to find other things to fill your time. If self improvement was easy, everyone would do it 😊

I feel for you younger kids having grown up on social media. I'm in my mid twenties and phone apps didn't really kick off until later in my childhood. People think it's odd that I don't use it but I don't really care anymore about their opinion now. I really think social media is the dumbest thing ever. I hope it dies eventually.

Edit: The only app I really use is reddit for FDS, if you even want to call reddit social media lol I don't count it because it's anonymous though we are technically socializing here.

Once you have I recomme d the book "digital minimalism". It's about detoxing from social media as well as changing your mindset about using it, why you use it and how often.

Take up knitting/embroidery or some other mindless activity you can do with your hands as a substitute. Most of my social media use comes from being bored but wanting to do something low on the critical-thinking scale. Ever since I started embroidering, I don't pick up my phone as much and I can sit there for hours.

You will feel less lonely when you have a real life of your own and not oogling other people's "fake lives" all the time. What interests do you have? Are there any hobbies/skills you want to devote your time to learning? Are there places you want to travel? The world is in front of you, not on your screen. Sorry to sound preachy, but I wish someone said that to me at your age, and I didn't have social media at your age at all.

How do you want to better yourself? I feel like if you have defined goals then you know what to structure your time around instead. Like do you want to get into existing hobbies, try new ones, or spend more time on your physical or mental health? Your education? Career, etc? Maybe consider having an insta but putting a limit on the time you spend on it each day and just balancing it out. Like start with 2 hours and eventually work down to an hour or a half hour.

I dove into other hobbies and social groups (many of which are meeting online right now due to COVID) and that helped me cut back on social media. I have to keep Facebook for community groups and groups related to work that I do, but also unfollowing most people (and getting a chrome extension that blocks the news feed) realllllly helped too. Just some thoughts if you're wanting to find a middle ground instead of deleting. r/nosurf is an awesome resource too!

I’ve been here and found that having something exciting helped give me the initial power to delete the apps and make me realize I don’t need them. After about a week off- it’s so much easier. The first few days you’ll be constantly picking up your phone and going to press the spot for the app that’s no longer there. Get a good book. Get into a show even. Do you like creating art? Journaling? Anything that’s not social media and that can fill easy mindless time. Substitution I believe is the first step, then being able to develop the attention span to not have to substitute but have a lifestyle shift in how your day is set up so that you won’t have small gaps to fill that was social media but rather larger chunks of time that you can devote to those hobbies or having a set routine (meal prepping, larger works of art, going for walks, a movie, etc.)

I spend a fair amount of time on social media. Mostly it's facebook groups about my hobbies and area of business, specifically the ones which have active comment sections. Watching a whole lot of very, very knowledgeable people talking about everything subject-specific under the sun has been AMAZING for my subject knowledge. Getting answers to my questions from literal multimillionaires and business owners who own 50+ properties and/or have a thriving business with revenue in the 8 figures, priceless. I've had actual focused one-on-one conversations with these people where they were teaching me something. For free. Giving away knowledge and information that's literally not available to be searched online.

Social media is what you make of it.
