I was browsing through the sub and saw this post where a woman basically got tricked into paying $200 for a date. Setting aside the fact that she kind of got fleeced by the guy, when I heard her say $200, it didn’t seem really expensive to me for two people.

It made me realize that a lot of us need to know what a nice first date should cost.

I think a good barometer is something like 3-5% of your after tax take home pay is a really nice first date.

Here’s how it breaks down for different incomes:

If he makes $3000/month — $90-$150.

$5000/month — $150-$250

$8000/month — $240-$400

These are just guidelines and I’m open to feedback but this is what feels appropriate as someone in a major city. He doesn’t have to spend the maximum, but if you’re dating a guy who is making six figures it should be a red flag if he’s unwilling to spend $90 for two people on a date. If he’s making $30,000 and he’s spending $500, that’s also a red flag and make sure he’s not love bombing you.
