A list of the things that I have attempted to fix: alcoholism, lying, cheating, obesity, not completing a college degree. The number of those things that I actually fixed: zero. 🤡 🤡

Awww man you win! Never got to try the fixing cheating one, but oooh actually wait maybe I win - the ONE THING now ex did do because of me was finish his degree, but dangit not because I actively tried to get him to, so dangit never mind...
And oh the irony, because we were soooo young and in hindsight my cluelessness was the most helpful thing - it was summer before I was a college sophomore and I was head over heels googly eyed at him at a party. One of the few things I’d known already about him was that he was 3 years older than me, so asked when he graduated - fully intending it as filler small talk to keep him from walking away lol - and he said well ehmmmm - to that point in my life I’d been so sheltered I’d honestly never encountered someone who went to college but didn’t finish! My dad was a college dean so...
Yeah so I was so unprepared for his response I blurted out something like “OMG! I’ll never be able introduce you to my parents!” which he was equally unprepared for (I mean who would be literally at a very first encounter! Oi) so asked me why, so I explained that as open minded as my dad was, I really wasn’t quite sure how he’d react to idea of me ever dating someone who hadn’t finished school. There was a pause for a minute and then moved on. Sure enough, he’d then re-enrolled and then graduated one semester before I did with a 3.8. And then I married him, and..... Sigh...

I feel you there. In college I was "casually" seeing an alcoholic that kept dumping more and more emotional baggage on me, up to and including how he apparently used to make meth before going to college and his friend died from taking the meth he made. All his friends would just pass him to me to deal with when he would get violent / incoherent / etc because dealing with negative feelings is the female's job or something. It's a very long story but eventually all those friends stopped talking to me because anything he did became my fault for not fixing him. We weren't even dating!!

Omigosh. Yesss. My last guy hadn’t completed his college degree, was still accepting money from his mother at the age of 29 and had no plans of ever getting his driver’s license because he used growing up in Dubai as an excuse. Excuse me your highness I didn’t know I was supposed to be your personal chauffeur.
When I think of what I put up with, in the hopes he’d grow up and finally love me the way I deserved, I have to stop myself from getting angry all over again. I was in a very bad place when we met.
Growth is an amazing thing! And so is this group!

I tried fixing my obese ex by helping him go hiking, teaching him about calorie intake, telling him not to eat certain food. They will never change! His family even thought I was his personal dietician and would ask me why he hadn't lost weight. Eventually, he told me he would never lose weight unless I moved in with him and cooked all his meals. 🤡🤡🤡

I made a bet with my obese ex that he couldn’t lose 80 pounds and if he did, I would pay for a vacation. He did lose 80 pounds with some sketchy medically supervised program including crazy amounts of B12 shots. I paid for the vacation and within three months, he had gained most of it back. However, I have to say that this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to fixing someone.

OR! That someone might come to realize that the time they are willing to invest into fixing you is a high risk, low profit venture and they would getter return on the money time represents by investing it into education, independence and coming to the final conclusion that ... damn, singlehood is amazing when you've got money to spend on things that mean something to you.

Yup. Can't go back in time to get my time back but am sure spending my time and money more wisely after fully incoroprating this philosophy. Never settling for a diy partner project again.

The only time it's justified to try to "fix" a LVM is if you're a vetrenarian.

I had a boyfriend who was a raging alcoholic and I told him I would leave him if he didn’t stop drinking and he actually stopped and legitimately got (and stayed) sober. But, he was doing it for himself as much as he was doing it for me: he was tired of being ashamed all the time. I was also tired of being the girlfriend of someone who got arrested all the time for his drinking. I think being honest with your partner (and yourself) is super important about how much you’re willing to tolerate. I was serious too... I was ready to walk.
But, obviously, no one will change if they benefit from not changing, and most importantly, if they don’t want to. And if you love someone who is doing something self destructive who won’t change it’s so fucking agonizing. No one can “fix” anyone, and it’s not our job as women to “fix” and sacrifice and build a world around serving men and solving their problem. I wish that we weren’t so often forced into this role, it’s such bullshit.
I’m usually on the end where people try to fix me and it’s stupid and exhausting.
