I don't necessarily see this as malicious, just confused and people-pleasy on his part (could still be malicious, looking-for-backup of course!). But that's the great thing about FDS - it doesn't have to be malicious to be unacceptable! No 'dates' or 'quasi-dates' with people who've already rejected us.

This just happened to me last week. I told my friends about it and some asked why we wouldn’t be friends lol. He doesn’t wanna be friends, he wants me to be the backup for when it doesn’t work out with the other girl.

Perhaps if two people mutely decide there’s no romance or interest on dating one another, friendship is possible. Not in cases like this.
