That's actually a bit subversive for 1961, lol. I'd say the butt of that joke is more the husband than the wife. And despite the revealing pic, I like the way she's waterskiing beautifully while he wipes out!! And at least he asked her out on real dates, and married her, presumably not taking a decade to do so. OK nostalgia time over. I agree with OP's point that the final picture is still 100% true today. Only difference would be that the woman in 2021, while still expected to cook and serve meals, probably didn't get any fun dates, or taken out dancing, or a nice wedding, or a beach vacation, or a nice home to move into with her new husband. Nowadays she'd be working full time to pay 50/50 rent or mortgage with some guy as his forever girlfriend, patiently waiting for some crumbs of his attention when he takes a break from his video games and porn. Also no man in 2021 has the attention span, the reading skills, or the interest in the world, to actually look at a newspaper.
