Before the paywall:

🚩Four years ago, Barbara Delgado received a text message from Giovanni Rivera asking who she was.

🚩“I was partying like a crazy person and had so many numbers I didn’t know who she was,” said Mr. Rivera, 40, who at the time was 🚩separated 🚩from his first wife and enjoying the bachelor life. “I met a lot of people because I didn’t want to be alone.” 🚩

🚩“I told her my philosophy of life and discovered she was a great listener,” Mr. Rivera said.

Months before they began talking, Mr. Rivera in February 2017 was 🚩suspended🚩 without pay from his position as a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officer, leaving him with 🚩more time on his hands. 🚩(He is appealing the decision.)

Don't forget the anger issues!! This guy is a walking red flag and the way that shirt strains against his gut? blergh

[–]denimbastardFDS Newbie 162 points163 points164 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And the fact he liked her because "she didn't talk about herself" when he "gabbed until 3am".

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 106 points107 points108 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Every little girl’s dream, a guy who can’t even find a shirt that fits for his wedding day.

[–]WhyComeToAStickyEndFDS Newbie 51 points52 points53 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

😂 Thanks for sharing this joke of an article! Poor lady, though she was smart to promote her hair and makeup business in the article. THIS KIND OF CONTENT HARMS WOMEN. Just give it time why oh why did she even take him seriously. Pickme to the maximum. Poor kid stuck in their mess too.

[–]maznykFDS Newbie 99 points100 points101 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I’d stick another flag next to “police officer” because statistically they’re more likely to be domestic abusers. This man is already older than her (the power dynamic will never be even) and is used to being in a position of control with no repercussions.

[–]Strict_Leopard1707FDS Newbie 117 points118 points119 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Not just a police officer, a police officer who is suspended without pay. Can you have exponential red flags? Is that a thing? 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

[–]ShieldMaidenLagerthaFDS Disciple 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Should we place bets on if he was suspended for alcoholism or domestic violence?

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Another commenter found the court record, it was domestic violence and harassment

[–]ShieldMaidenLagerthaFDS Disciple 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol. Of course…classic!

[–]ShieldMaidenLagerthaFDS Disciple 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You forgot to put an extra red flag after “police officer”. 😂

[–]AveryhvwFDS Newbie 238 points239 points240 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Red flag 🚩 that I cannot get passed: She doesn’t remember meeting him and he was a police officer… my intuition says he totally saw her somewhere and used his privileges as a cop to find her information. At best he made a mutual friend give it to him and then proceeded with this play act of “I was partying and meeting so many women I just text random numbers in my phone asking them who they are” 🤡🤡🤡

Seriously though, that’s not just a Bobo the clown level red flag for me, that’s a John Wayne Gacy killer clown level red flag 🚩🤡🔪🚩

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 77 points78 points79 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

But but he’s “family oriented”!

Edit: yes that’s super creepy and I didn’t even pick up on that part.

[–]jp2117515FDS Newbie 104 points105 points106 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Family oriented….but he’s just NOW spending time getting to know his daughter because when he was married he was “working long hours” 🚩never around, probably getting shitfaced at a bar after a shift

[–]Some-Air9442FDS Newbie 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Family oriented toward other men’s wives, his prison and gang family, and his illegitimate offspring.

[–]Professional-Ad-457FDS Newbie 46 points47 points48 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

‘Partying’ in scrotese = going out intentionally to ask as many strangers as possible for sex in the hopes that one says yes

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you’re Gen X or older, partying means “cocaine”. If you’re just going out drinking and having fun you say “going out”, or “bar hopping” or “clubbing”. Partying = cocaine.

[–]Some-Air9442FDS Newbie 34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Omg yuck!!!

He was using police databases to stalk beautiful women!

Maybe that’s why he got fired?

[–]WhyComeToAStickyEndFDS Newbie 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

!!! I think this could be it. Whoa.

[–]Some-Air9442FDS Newbie 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are programs for domestic violence survivors that literally suppress their drivers license info because…so many domestic abusers are cops!

[–]ShieldMaidenLagerthaFDS Disciple 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They sound like a pair of over the hill black out drunks

[–]ceramicunicornFDS Disciple 189 points190 points191 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No f’in way, her name is literally “Barbara”, I cannot even....Barb, Patron Saint of Builders jokes are just low hanging fruit here 😂

Ok but seriously, for the sake of the sisterhood, now that she’s already in, all I can say is I hope the prenup is in place and that these improvements aren’t just window dressing, and that it actually goes well. Crazier things have happened.

[–]nothingt0sayFDS Newbie 53 points54 points55 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cause if things go south she will be making alimony payments

[–]nancylibraFDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Doesn’t Barbara translate to “unbearable”?? 😵😵😵

[–]lucidlotusFDS Newbie 126 points127 points128 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

WTF did I just read...WTAF, New York Times?

So many red flags here, but “She’s a great listener” and “She didn’t talk about herself”... 🤮

[–]GalactoseGalFDS Newbie 102 points103 points104 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I feel like the weddings editor included them to troll us all.

[–]AocwannabeFDS Newbie 40 points41 points42 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This must be troll satire.😂😂😂

[–]aluriaphinFDS Newbie 281 points282 points283 points 4 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

I think I would flair this "Pick Me Culture" lmao. First two red flags without even needing to read it, 1) she's gorgeous and he's gross and 2) Mr. Rivera, 40, and Ms. Delgado, 33. 'Nuff said...

Edit: Oh JFC he's a "suspended without pay" cop and she owns a successful business?? Wtf is wrong with these Pick Mes???

Edit 2: FFS he was an alcoholic with anger issues about his suspension for TWO YEARS before he "tapered off" WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS WOMAN?!?! I hate everything...

[–]Some-Air9442FDS Newbie 60 points61 points62 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

So she’ll get to have this ugly old man at home with her all day, and when she wants to leave him she’ll get to pay him alimony.

Look lady, if you’re gonna pay, can you at least get your money’s worth? A middle aged unemployed man who looks like a chipmunk ain’t it.

Edit: FDS rescue mission anyone?

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 47 points48 points49 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You’re right.

[–]pukubr 51 points52 points53 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh JFC he's a "suspended without pay" cop and she owns a successful business?? Wtf is wrong with these Pick Mes???

I heard successful women tend to attract toxic men because these women are used to working hard for everything in life, so they think a man is a fixer upper, not knowing the reverse is true in love. The more you try, the less he values you.

[–]WandernWondernFDS Newbie 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I believe this is true - 100%

Signed, a successful former pick-me

[–]nothingt0sayFDS Newbie 86 points87 points88 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Sickening. Absolutely gross.

She married an unemployed ex cop. Not in a million years!!!

I hated the most how she "didnt talk about herself and was a good listener." They actually published that!!! Shame on them

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He’s working through his anger issues, ok?

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And his anxiety about using his own money to pay for anything because it was safely in his bank account? TRASH MAN

[–]Confidence_RelativeFDS Newbie 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Fired cop. What shit was he up to to get fired without pay.

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Domestic violence and harassment

[–]extraodiFDS Newbie 83 points84 points85 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So she married an unemployed man, and considered this a win because “her persistence payed off” why?! Just why? What could she possibly like about him?

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 59 points60 points61 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gorgeous, has her own business.. fucked if I know. Pressure from her family to settle, maybe?

[–]nothingt0sayFDS Newbie 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Must be S.E.X which causes intelligent humans to lose their ability to think rationally!!

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 30 points31 points32 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

With that guy? More likely she is possessed by aliens than that guy is good in bed.

[–]dogfart4FDS Newbie 80 points81 points82 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No one single thing was mentioned about who she is as a person. Everything was about what she did for him….

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 39 points40 points41 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gah, you’re right, and I didn’t even notice. This tells us all kinds of things about him and next to nothing about her. Willing to listen to the “philosophy of life” from an unemployed alcoholic ex-cop with anger issues until 3 am is not a personality, NYT!

“He proposed with a topaz ring” 🚩

Maybe if he had spent less money on booze he could’ve afforded a diamond ring.

[–]jp2117515FDS Newbie 86 points87 points88 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hmmmmm 🤨It is curiously close to the holiday and I’m just speculating but I wonder if he messed up Valentine’s Day so badly this was out of guilt after an ultimatum…🤢You could easily pick up a topaz on the fly at the mall on the way home from the liquor store…just a hunch though

[–]thewetdog_Ruthless Strategist 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I missed this one! 🤕

[–]AliceArcherLorde 30 points31 points32 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That is EXACTLY how my friend's ex husband proposed. Since their marriage he has served two jail sentences for his violence against her. She is now free of him but he's done a lot of damage.

[–]WhyComeToAStickyEndFDS Newbie 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm so concerned. She and the man's baby mama needed FDS. Time has proven so many times that such relationships do not end well for the woman.

[–]thicctoriaFDS Newbie 44 points45 points46 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Haha, I was just about to write about this. I know diamonds aren't for everyone and that's okay but don't just accept a cheap ass topaz. There are alternatives to diamonds, like good quality rubies, emeralds, alexandrite, sapphire... NOT topaz, one of the most abundant gemstones lol.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I like aquamarines. They aren’t cheap, but they aren’t diamonds.

[–]DivineGoddess1111111FDS Newbie 18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was another eye roll moment for me

[–]randomgirl34861FDS Newbie 166 points167 points168 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like he decided he wanted a relationship when he realized he couldn’t afford rent in the Upper East Side. Then, once he lived with her a bit he saw she would take care of his daughter. He realized he was 40 and that is a gorgeous woman in her early 30’s. This isn’t love. This is convenient for him. There’s nothing inspiring or cute here.

[–]jp2117515FDS Newbie 79 points80 points81 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So is he just a “stay at home drunk” now? Did he ever find employment? Article never disclosed that? I didn’t see he leveled up career wise

[–]WandernWondernFDS Newbie 31 points32 points33 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don’t think he did. I think he’s still ‘fighting’ the decision to be suspended without pay. I mean how bad do you have to f up to be suspended without pay as a cop in some of the most unionized states in the union?

[–]jp2117515FDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just another hunch maybe his drinking became an issue on the job.

[–]xfelugirlxFDS Newbie 56 points57 points58 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

“Anger issues” and alcoholic without a job and two kids he didn’t see until this barb the builder came. Girl you and this whole situation is pathetic.

I get the vibe that the ex-wife ran this announcement 🤭 and did it just right

Edit: a topaz ring 😩❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

[–]ScrappleSandwichesFDS Newbie[S] 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Haaa! Seriously, could it make him look any worse? I’m surprised it doesn’t mention erectile dysfunction.

[–]WhyComeToAStickyEndFDS Newbie 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I hope so too as it's too ridiculous! But the article included a promotion of the makeup and hair business. Likely that it's printed due to her pickmeism 🤢 Can't even imagine all the wrong ways of living for women that the daughter has been witnessing

[–]DivineGoddess1111111FDS Newbie 44 points45 points46 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I counted a least 25. Kinda lost count with all the eye rolling and nose snorting I was doing 🤡🤡🤡

Cops get away with all kinds of stuff in America with just a slap on the wrist. I wonder what heinous act he must’ve committed to be suspended without pay.

Also, imagine dating an alcoholic, angry, and unemployed man who also happens to be a deadbeat dad (before she showed up).

[–]VanessaViewsFDS Newbie 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's what I'm thinking. It's so hard to get suspended without pay. I'm actually worried for her safety.

Full text:

Four years ago, Barbara Delgado received a text message from Giovanni Rivera asking who she was.

“I was partying like a crazy person and had so many numbers I didn’t know who she was,” said Mr. Rivera, 40, who at the time was separated from his first wife and enjoying the bachelor life. “I met a lot of people because I didn’t want to be alone.”

“I didn’t remember meeting him either,” Ms. Delgado, 33, added.

In the days after, the two talked on the phone several times before agreeing to meet the following week. “I told her my philosophy of life and discovered she was a great listener,” Mr. Rivera said.

Months before they began talking, Mr. Rivera in February 2017 was suspended without pay from his position as a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officer, leaving him with more time on his hands. (He is appealing the decision.)

Mr. Rivera, who is Italian and Puerto Rican, grew up in the Bronx and received an associate degree in labor studies from SUNY Empire State College. He has an 8-year-old daughter, Bella; he and his ex-wife share custody.

Ms. Delgado, who was born in Mexico City and raised in Seattle, graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in business administration. She is the owner of Hair After NYC, a hair and makeup business based in New York.

On July 5, 2017, the day of their first date for drinks at Carroll Place, an Italian restaurant and bar in Greenwich Village, Mr. Rivera arrived an hour early. Ms. Delgado, coming from work, arrived an hour late, just as he was preparing to leave.

“Barbara was apologetic about being late,” Mr. Rivera said. “I thought she was stunning, unpretentious and real. She asked about Bella and didn’t talk about herself. We gabbed until 3 a.m.”

Ms. Delgado said she liked his outgoing personality and smart humor. “He was family oriented and a great conversationalist.”

After their second date, at a comedy club, they spent a weekend in Atlantic City dining on Italian food and laughing. But when Ms. Delgado wanted to make the relationship exclusive, Mr. Rivera wanted to break up.

She was not willing to call it quits, however. “I quickly called him back because I thought he was honest, from a similar culture, and had a big heart,” Ms. Delgado said. “He encouraged my career, and I trusted him. I wanted to give it a chance.”

Her persistence paid off. In 2018, they moved into an Upper East Side apartment together, where the couple was forced to confront Mr. Rivera’s anxiety about not working and his frustrations about needing to borrow from his savings.

“My anxiety was high and I drank to feel normal, but after two years of Barbara’s love and waking up happy each morning, I tapered off,” he said. “She has supported me every single day.”

Ms. Delgado added, “Even though we had some rough patches with his anger over the job situation, I am an optimistic person, and he treats me with love, like a best friend. Things are better now.”

In December 2020, the couple moved to Edgewater, N.J. They spent a great deal of time with Bella, taking her to area malls, street fairs, trampoline parks and on trips to Lake George. “Barbara has helped me gain the love of my daughter who barely saw me during my marriage because I worked such long hours,” Mr. Rivera said.

On Feb. 15, while Ms. Delgado was unpacking groceries in the kitchen, he proposed with a topaz ring. “I cried while saying yes,” she said.

They were married Oct. 19, on Miami Beach behind the Shelborne South Beach hotel, because Ms. Delgado had dreamed of an oceanfront ceremony in Florida. To honor their different cultures, the service was translated in English, Spanish and Italian by the officiant, Frank Nunez, who is ordained as both a Catholic and Universal Life minister. Face masks and hand sanitizer were provided to their 39 guests.

A 1950s Cuban themed outdoor reception featured cigar rollers and, as décor, a rented 1959 Ford Thunderbird painted pink.

“Givoanni’s struggles have been difficult, but have made our resolve unbreakable,” Ms. Delgado said. “Throughout all of that hardship our love grew stronger. We can face whatever challenges come our way.”

Let’s start by comparing the education background( she is way out of his league there) I don’t see what he has to offer her really. She really settled.

Holy shit! Most of this reads to me like a parody of a disaster of a relationship. I'll give them two years before they separate and divorce.

Doesn’t it?! I expect next he will move in his elderly parents and expect her to take care of them, all the while still not having a job. (And how bad of a cop do you have to be to get suspended without pay?)

(And how bad of a cop do you have to be to get suspended without pay?)

Woman, I was literally thinking this!

You’ve gotta really burn some calories to find the one Trump-era, NY/NJ career cop who did something so heinous he was actually suspended without pay.

That part alone is nightmare fuel - let alone when she leaves this little cry for help:

Even though we had some rough patches with his anger over the job situation ….Things are better now.

I tried to Google him but found nothing. I really wonder, though. And also the backstory to this whole announcement.

“Rough patches with his anger,” what does that mean, and how bad does it have to be to be noteworthy to put it in your wedding announcement?!

The NYT is trash for this. This is what we mean when we say women are socially conditioned to marry someone and not ‘be’ someone. Cultural misogyny at its finest.

“She didn’t talk about herself”-how the hell does that make her “unpretentious”? He’s a total narcissist. Imagine going on a date, getting monologued to and not being asked a single question?

He is not a prize. I hope she has a pre-nup or post-nup. She’ll need it.

[–]ForestDwellingSkunkFDS Newbie 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I can’t even believe stories like this are still being printed. How do you write about a “love story” where the main characteristics of the woman are that she puts up with bullshit and not being prioritized, she “doesn’t talk about herself” and “listens to [the man’s] philosophy on life” and somehow try to spin this as romantic. I just can’t!! It’s just such blatant propaganda trying to convince women to put up with NV/LV man because they might!! Eventually!! Get a ring and have the opportunity to be a bangmaid who never talks about herself for the rest of her life. It’s honestly infuriating reading a story like this, I don’t know how anyone can see it and not be overwhelmed by the inherent misogyny.

accused and arrested for menacing in the second degree, assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree. The higher misdemeanour charges were later dropped to harassment in the second degree.

So a good guy all round?

“The matter proceeded to the Domestic Violence Division..” so, beating on and harassing his ex-wife? It gets better and better, by which I mean worse.

[–]weightsANDplantsFDS Newbie 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I bet the ex-wife was too scared (fair!) and that’s why they say charges were dropped down as the DA didn’t have enough evidence - and he’s suing the PD for $15,000,000 in punitive damages and $500,000 for his emotional distress?!!

Sort of on a related note re: woman waiting for a ring. What do you guys think of Kate Middleton waiting for about a decade to marry PW? Would you say her situation is more forgivable due to his unusual position, or how he "wanted to make sure" b/c of what happened to Diana?

[–]repurposedschleemFDS Newbie 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nah, the law of “if he wanted to, he would,” is pretty universal. Henry VIII created a whole got dang church for Anne Boleyn…and I know what happened next but the point is: if a man wants to do something, he will make it happen, rules and protocol be damned. I mean…Camilla never went away. Harry straight up left the royal family. Will waited forever because he knew he could get away with it, as she gave him a proposal ultimatum in uni days and he dumped her a la Warner and Elle in Legally Blonde. That’s why Kate was ultimately picked: a pretty woman from a good (read: wealthy) family who he believes wouldn’t ever dump him.

Also I believe he’s cheated on her with her former friend Rose Hanbury.

[–]her-vagestyFDS Newbie 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

He's hardly a HVM, didn't he cheat on her?

[–]Professional-Ad-457FDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Tell me more! Have not read anything about this in the uk but our media is censored when it comes to the royal family..so what have you heard?

[–]Ninja_Flower_LadyFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just some rumors of him cheating with Rose Hanbury. I'm interested too, but as a common folk, I'll never know whether or not it's true. On one hand, I think the press can make up some ridiculous, untrue crap to sell their stories. On the other hand, sometimes they are able to sniff out things that DO have elements of truth (like the Kate-Meghan feud, but of course now we know the truth was it was a William-Harry feud. They also got it wrong which woman made the other cry).

You can Google some reddit threads, there's a few posts about it, but it's all speculation. What I wonder more, is if KM would have done everything she did for PW, if he wasn't a prince. Like, if he was a regular man, with the same personality, looks, and decently wealthy, if she would still be as devoted as she was and waited for ten years. To some people, there IS a lot of value in their status (of course, there's no right or wrong to it, it's just what different people value).

[–]Professional-Ad-457FDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks! Rose looks just like Kate - PW obviously has a type! It was only when she broke up with PW that he got his act together and proposed. Humiliating to be called Waitey Katie all that time.
