If everyone can treat men that way, then it's not toxic masculinity. It's oppression.

It makes me think that a lot of oppression towards women in mordent western society is actually internal toxicity and so feminists project that attitude into men.

I've asked Feminists in response to this if shaming women for failing to be feminine is toxic femininity the way they claim that for toxic masculinity. The answer was of course not, that would be misogyny.

The difference is, most feminists frame toxic masculinity as a primarily internal issue which can be solved by just getting in touch with your feminine side and learning to deprogram yourself. This person (whom I agree with) argues that it’s a primarily external issue and that no amount of getting in touch with your emotions will help since the world will only ignore or even bully you for it. That’s the differentiator, which seems to be lost on SelfAwarewolves and similar subs.

Please someone explain to me why they call it "toxic masculinity" and not "misandry / internalized misandry." Feminists don't use the terms "toxic femininity" to refer to the set of female gender expectations, they use "misogyny / internalized misogyny" instead.

Because masculinity is a set of roles that men take on, not just that are placed on them. Feminists don't do a good job separating these two concepts in men. They will talk about toxic masculinity leading to violence in men, in male suicide, in all sorts of things. So we are used to seeing it used to target male behavior. Honestly not so much behavior towards males. When was the last time we talked about the toxic masculinity displayed by women? Well if we are talking about what is perpetrating the gender role there is absolutely things that contribute.

Feminists act as though the reasoning is mysterious. But talk about women furthering toxic masculinity and see if they get defensive.

As much as I agree with the arguments made by the members of this sub, I have to say I was quite impressed with the depth of the conversation we had with r/selfawarewolves. They didn't censor and there was active listening on both sides.

I read the thread over there and was pleasantly surprised by the good faith debate I saw. Kudos to those self aware wolves for doing reddit right. The easy shortcut is to just label each other haters but not so in this case.

Kudos to them. I'd like to see more of this on Reddit.
