I disagree that this is a bad thing. Really, this sort of psychology was always lurking below the surface. Only a fool would think Victorian times were a social paradise in light of the millions of bastards sired by fathers who were either so rich that they were completely insulated from consequence or were transients that blithely knocked up a whore. The women were no better. Intentional miscarriages were all too common and many simply did not have the time, energy, or will to properly raise said bastards.
