I don't envy you for being in India, it's not exactly the kind of place I'd ever want to find myself living for many reasons.

I would suggest, if you're able, migrate out of India. Make it your life's goal to get out of that country and go somewhere else, away from the laws and traditions that do nothing but suffocate you. Don't let the pressure hold you back, do what you need to do to escape while you're young enough to do so.

That's the only thing worse than divorce, in my opinion. As someone who has been in an unhappy marriage and is going through divorce, I can say in full honesty that I am glad that divorce is an option.

Also, what do you mean that you will be 'forced' into an arranged marriage? Are they going to drag you, kicking and screaming, into the temple?

I found a simple way to deal with parents who want to get you into an arranged marriage; tell them you'll go for it...once you find the right one.

When they see the demands and the level of entitlement that most women today have, they'll start to understand.

When you remove the make up, the camera angles and the filters, most women really aren't that good looking.

There are only a small handful that are genuinely beautiful and they tend to be the most entitled.

Overall it's just easier to say no to a specific set of proposals rather than say no to the entire concept.

I've heard about some of the bullshit that happens in India to married men. Apparently, it's legitimately common for the wife and her family to outright tell her husband that unless she gives her family an outrageous sum of money, she'll falsely accuse him of violence and whatever else she can think of, and her whole family will back up her unfounded claims. And those men have no choice but to comply with her blackmail and demands, because even if they tried to divorce them, they know that they would be falsely accused of other crimes and that it wouldn't end well. They are complete slaves.

Never get married in India. If your parents try to impose it on you, go far away. Ghost them completely if necessary. Whatever you do, make sure you don't become a slave dreaming of suicide. Your life is worth more than that. If you're forced into a marriage interview alone with the potential bride, save the entire conversation on your phone and keep it on your computer. Make sure you're in a place with cameras. Protect yourself.

This is eye-opening my friend. I am from India too (Calcutta, born there) yet was adopted as an infant in the US. Reading all the stuff on here makes me wonder what my life over there would be like had I stayed, and all I can do is shudder.

Someday I hope to return to India, just to see what it's like. Although I know it deep in my heart that I NEVER want to meet my real mother based off the stories here.

My childhood in the US was no cakewalk, but difference between here and there is how much freedom I have. Like seriously, I fuckin' love being an orphan. Used to cry tears of sadness about it. Now they're all happy.
