I don't care for what you did. It's the type of thing I'd expect from a feminist doing the hiring process. The MRM strives to be more egalitarian than that.

I'd have asked questions about her volunteer work. Get a feel for her responsibilities and opinions first. Chances are, as a volunteer, she had very little power over the agency's policies. Likely women who are victims of domestic violence would prefer to work with other women, and a person who volunteers to assist victims of DV is doing a good thing, regardless of who the victim is. Blame the agency for their shitty policies, not her.

The angry part of me wants to say thank you so much. I have seen how these "volunteers" help "victims" alter their stories and instruct them how to lie under oath.

The part of me that still believes in justice hopes that maybe she was one of the good ones. If they even exist.

I would have given her a chance. Maybe ask her what she learned at the position, "Do you think men need DV shelters as well?", and "If you decide to set up a DV shelter in this city for men, how would you do it?"

I'd guess at some point she'd say something sexist. But maybe she wouldn't.

It's possible she was interested in helping DV victims and volunteered at a shelter for that purpose. I mean it's not like there are a lot of shelters that don't exclude men that she could have picked from (are there any in your town?).

So that could go either way.

This was unprofessional if her work with the DV agency had no bearing on the job you were hiring for. I don't know whether it had or not. Whenever I've been part of the hiring process, I've always been very careful to document why I was giving someone the thumbs down, especially if they were a woman or minority, and to show that the reason was strictly job-related.

Turning her away does the company, fellow employees, their customers and strategic partners a positive service.

I honestly think you did a good thing. As has been said, you don't want someone working for your company that will basically ignore the plight of half of the population solely based on their gender.

Part of me wants to go "You should've asked her about it, conducted an interview, and then just never called her back.", but I feel like bringing it up in the interview would make her feel like that's the reason you didn't hire her, and you could've gotten in some sort of trouble.

If this story is true, you are an asshole for dismissing her who deserves only condemnation.
If this story is not true, you are an asshole for submitting it, and again, you deserve only condemnation.

Yes, who she volunteers for and what their reputation is should color your decision.

I suspect what you did was illegal, I don't know, it should be.

I am hopeful you will one day experience a job search and learn about all the petty reasons people have for ignoring you.
