Many people on this sub will make the sensitivity argument. I avoid that one because it will invariably draw the anger of people who are at the point in their life where they refuse to consider the possibility that they have been harmed by circumcision. So you will always hit a wall. I prefer the argument that it is unethical to perform any cosmetic surgery on someone who cannot give informed consent. Then I explain that, if I have a son, I will pay for him to get a circumcision if he wants to when he turns 18 and after he has thoroughly researched it. That usually at least gets people thinking.

It's socially acceptable because it's done under the guise of medical benefits.

Read the AAP paper and notice how they never talk about the stats of these so called benefits.

Then read the Canadian paper and see how the stats are presented plainly and clearly.

It's a barbaric practice that has no place in a civilized society. It should be banned and any doctor who practices the procedure should be charged with child abuse and thrown in jail. The same is true of FGM.

Outside of legitimate medical necessity it shouldn't be allowed without the consent of the boy/man until they are 18. I had it done for medical reasons when I was a child and have no issue with it, but just for cultural or aesthetic reasons it is completely unnecessary and potentially dangerous.

I'm fine with adult men voluntarily deciding to circumcise themselves, and that's it. You have no right to mutilate your child or anyone else's.

Anecdotal, but had this discussion many times with my wife about whether we would do it or not if we had a boy. Admittedly should have had the conversation before she was pregnant, but didn't think it would blow up like it did.

Her arguments were she didn't want to have to clean it, she didn't want him to be different from the majority, didn't want to risk increased infection rates, and they wouldn't remember the pain.

My arguments were it's still purposefully inflicted pain in the most sensitive part of the body on our child, you being lazy isn't a good reason to mutilate, and they will rarely see another penis and they are going to be different in many others ways to begin with so it's pretty minor, and the damage caused by a botched operation outweighs infection risks.

We ended up with a girl so the argument never got resolved, but I'm pretty sure she's still convinced doing it is for the best. I swore I was going to make her watch a video of the procedure being performed if we were going to have a boy. I still might if it comes up again.

Circumcision of either gender is forced sexual mutilation of a minor who posses no ability to consent. People get up in arms over female circumcision, and they call it "genital mutilation." With male circumcision they bring up studies to rationalize the mutilation by saying "it's healthier" and then go on to admit "well uncircumcised cocks look gross anyway."

Name such a case that would come up in the context of a child. There are always exceptional cases, but I'm not aware of anything for which male circumcision is a reasonable response.

Sometimes I don't know what to think.

My personal sense of philosophy tells me that it is unnecessary and for the person to choose for themselves. Not circumcising is the morally right thing to do.

I also don't believe that we should run around telling men that they have been mutilated. I mean maybe they have but if you tell someone that most likely if they don't feel mutilated then they are just going to be defensive. At the end of the day there is nothing they can do about it. All you accomplish there is making people feel shitty.

On the other hand, circumcision is enshrined in many religions. If you are an atheist I can understand the drive to just outright ban circumcision and possibly the religions that allow it, but I don't think that is the right thing to do either.

I think the most reasonable course of action, the one that will win over new parents with some regularity, is to advocate that circumcision is simply unnecessary, has no real benefits, and can be detrimental to your son's future sex life. Crowd-funded scientific studies cited in child-rearing publications and popular science articles that get meme-ifyed will gain the most traction, especially once the message has been repeated enough times. That's all it takes: once people hear that circumcision is without merit as much or more than they hear of its supposed value, they will begin to believe it. People do what they think is right, and they get that from what they see, hear, read, and are taught by their family, friends, and schools.

Banning it outright makes sense to me as a long term end-game but the first focus should be on lowering the number of circumcised boys. It isn't a war we can win with a single battle.
