That's the logic they have. “I'm strong and can stand up to a man if he decides to use physical force against me”. But when it's reversed, “He hit a woman, which isn't okay, burn the patriarchy!” it's just ridiculous at this point
[–][deleted] 63 points64 points65 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Self defence should not be gender biased
[–]jawa-80 20 points21 points22 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely true...as long as it stays at that and you dont take the opportunity to get into a "ground and pound" I cant see an issue with it....had an ex do a 4 step running punch straight into my nose in our hallway when I was about 22....when my vision came back, I could see she was coming back for more. Whilst I only went at half steam she got a fucking hiding! it really was self defence if I hadnt she would have opened up on me...I had her EX warn me about her and thought it was just out of jealousy, but it turned out to be true she did it quite a few times after and got it straight back everytime...til she came at me with a knife in the kitchen and I just walked out.

I agree with the principle but not with the execution.
Look, 90% of the times if a woman were to punch me it would definitely hurt, but if I were to deck her she would go down on her ass. It's the same reason why fighting sports are separated by weight classes.
So when it comes to being hit it goes like this:
Gender doesn't really factor in the equation. There is only one reasonable goal here: getting out of harm's way possibly without escalating violence.
Otherwise it cease to be self defense and it becomes retaliation and that's simply not good.

Have you ever been attacked by someone? Man, woman, big, or small, you don’t typically have time to make all these calcite decisions. Often people first reaction is to fight back.
And if you don’t want to get hit by someone bigger than you, don’t hit someone bigger than you
[+]neoalfa -6 points-5 points-4 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Decisions? As you have notice, my first instinct is to run.
[–]JaxJags904 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I just don’t understand why people are so worried about a woman’s safety when she is actively hitting someone. If you are attacking someone you’re gonna get hit. Guys know this, girls think they can do whatever they want
[–]techtesh 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yup my person rule is.. Would I beat my younger brother for that... If yes... Eat a punch if not.. I would probably use my aserbic tongue to melt you away
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
And if you have nowhere to run to, what then?
[–]neoalfa 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Again see point 2. Run if you can. Fight if you cannot.
There is a reason why the first thing they teach you in any self-defense course is to run away from all the figths you can avoid.
[–]WorldController 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
my first inctinct is to run
Again, have you ever been attacked by someone? If so, was this your immediate reaction? If not, then how can you say this?
[–]neoalfa 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I have been punched before. I stepped back and put up my guard, however shoddily. He didn't follow through when I didn't go down at the first hit, mostly because other people got in the way.
[–]WorldController 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So your first instinct in that situation wasn't to run, then? Seems like you were prepared to fight.
[–]neoalfa 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No. My first instinct was to put something between my face and more punches. Hitting back would have been an additional step.
[–]ExcellentSauce 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So you expect someone bigger than you to knock you on your ass, but when your the bigger party you walk away.
It sounds like your just non confrontational and would take a punch in any situation.
Not saying it's bad. Just saying not everyone is non confrontational.
[–]neoalfa 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
My assessment is based on the premise that being punched has already happened, likely out of the blue.
After all, if I could see the situation leading to me being punched and did not divert course then I would be an idiot (and possibly have provoked it).
If I didn't see it coming we are already past the point of no return and I have to decide how to deal with it. See above post.
That is right, I am not confrontational.

That's not how it works if a smaller dude attacks a bigger dude. Gender shouldn't come into play. The principle that I cant defend myself because I'm stronger, is asinine.
How about instead of telling men that we're stronger so we cant defend ourselves, someone tells women that that they shouldn't throw hands without expecting hands thrown back
I don't care about gender. I just want to take the shortest route out a fight that doesn't involve escalating violence. I don't care about the gender of the other person.
I will fight back if I have to.
[–]techtesh -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well i dont wanna be the contrarian or dysphrasic but it kinda is.. Men and women often use different techniques.. Due to the fact men have much higher upper body strength thus to take down the same opponent a women might require martial arts training but I can just punch my way out... So i suggest we all adopt the Israeli model and train everyone.. (it might have some trickle down effects on the obesity epidimic as well)
[–]ClubZlut 66 points67 points68 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Don't hit someone in anger that you're not prepared to fight.
Man or woman, when you hit someone with the intent of doing harm, you become an opponent, and if you're not ready for whatever that may entail, keep your hands to yourself.
[–]Lethn 42 points43 points44 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
The problem is there are a disturbing amount of women out there who were clearly never taught this.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah but white knights are generally so very small.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It isn’t that they weren’t taught it, it’s just that they’ve learned that they can get away with it because there are no consequences for hitting a man, throwing a drink over him etc.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Don't hit someone in anger
Honestly you could have stopped there. But the full answer is don't hit anyone unless you're prepared to get hit back (ie a fight). Or, as my parents taught me, never start a fight. But always be the one to finish it. This has different connotations given frequency with which women are inciting the violence these days - but remains valid imo.

It's not just a moral thing though. In what situation will punching someone back help, in any way? It'll just make them even more enraged, and they will likely do something even more rash.
Not only that, you will suddenly face chances of being called the aggressor, even though it was just a reaction.
Unless there is absolutely no other way out of it (where it becomes real self defense in that case), "being the bigger person" is just an overall better outcome for you, let alone morality.
[–]Gozie5 14 points15 points16 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
For me, This "never hit back" rule only applies to children. Because they don't have the full mental capacity.
If an adult (man, woman, animal or alien) hits me, I will hit back.

Playing devil's advocate here - were are these two polls from?
The wording suggests they are aimed at opposite sexes (the first to women and latter to men), which makes it look as though the two audiences are of different opinions - so it's not as if the women are saying "I should be able to punch a man" AND "men shouldn't hit women back, no matter what". It looks to me like women are saying "yes, hit that man back" but men are saying "nah dude, don't hit her" (albeit by the tiniest of margins) - which is a totally different narrative...

No surprise that hypocrisy is a central aspect of a gynocentric society.
[–]GendhisKhan 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
An important aspect of this is this is how it's seen with the police. If your female partner (or rando) is knocking you about, you cannot try and defend yourself. Fight back, or act defensively (pin their arms etc), you're going to be the one in trouble. You just gotta leave. And if they're physically blocking you from leaving, that's when you should be recording if you're not already, and on speaker-phone with the police.
See a lot of comments, especially on other male-focused subreddits, where they say to hit back, "Equal right equal lefts" all that stuff, that they shouldn't have hit you if they weren't prepared for it to come back. It's terrible advice, and downright dangerous. You will go to jail.
[–]DKS6 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yeah the self defense laws are pretty specific. For a good defense you’ve got to have no way to exit, they’re harming you, they’re relentless, the criteria is crazy. Hitting leaves bruises, that’s why some sorts of restraint holds are better and looks better on you for not breaking someone’s face.
[–]GendhisKhan 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I didn't know of any restraint holds that wouldn't leave bruises tbh I'll have to dig into that. The one time I tried restraining, left a thumb-sized bruise on their wrist. Had that held over me till it faded, I never tried again.
[–]chadwickofwv 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know this is an unpopular opinion but strength disparity should be taken into consideration here, and when I say that I don't apply gender to that statement. I'm 6'1 250lbs, if a 130lb woman takes a swing at me unless shes a trained fighter I'm not swinging back. Same thing applies to a guy, if I have some scrawny guy pissed at me for some reason or another trying to fight me I'm going to defend myself but I'm not going to retaliate, I'm not looking to kill anyone.
[–]anillop 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My rule of thumb, if a woman hits me like a woman (ie slap, open hand, nothing to the face, weak punch) I won't hit back but if she hits me like a man (ie closed fist, strong, to the face, she took boxing) she gets hit back. I would never hit first and I have never had to use this rule.
I slapped a woman in a bar bc she grabbed my crotch. Mind you this is after telling her i wasnt interested. 10/10 would do again. Yknow under the right circumstances.

Some guys' punches don't hurt that much (I'm not bragging or tryna say I'm tough). If a weak dude picks a fight with me then that was his choice. He chose to assault someone clearly stronger than him. If a woman makes that choice I'ma honor it.

Honestly taking a punch and laughing in their face makes you look 10x more badass than getting triggered and fighting back.
I am more ofa pacifist though despite doing Karate for 4 years and wrestling for 8. I don't really think you should punch people unless they are relentless or threatening people who can't fight for themselves.
Ironically though, in the few circumstances it's justified, I really really enjoy fighting. That may be a bit fucked to say, I know, but I love it.

[–]DownrightCaterpillar 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's different though
The beginning of all disingenuous arguments. Yes, men and women are different, but men and women aren't different enough to have a double standard. You hit, you get hit. Simple rule that everyone can follow.
I doubt that I, a small man, could seriously harm Dwayne Johnson, but regardless I think he's perfectly entitled to strike me if I hit him first. It really doesn't matter whether the aggressor is capable of doing harm (hint: they always can if they try hard enough, your balls are very weak), what matters is their behavior.
[–]OBeliskPhantasm -5 points-4 points-3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Biilogivally speaking, you are a built killing machine compared to a woman. If a woman hoeecer is hitting You and trying to harm you, gender goes oit the window. Me personally, face, and balls are an instant "I dont give a fuck about your vagina, youte going to get hurt." However if a woman is shoving Me.and shit she's gonna get shoved back. Depending on the aggresiveness I'm going to try to stop them without punching their lights out by reetrsining or getteng them as far away as I can. If I can't I'm gonna amp up and warn them. If they persist or hurt me more I'm done.

I can see both sides of this argument. Women should be treated as guys, and if they punch us they do deserve to be punched. However as grown man, almost no women are a threat to me in most circumstances. If a women punches me, I'm not really in danger unless unless she's a giant or a trained fighter.
I've never been punched by girl, but if it happened, I think what I would probably do is give her a good shove and leave, or grab onto her and restrain her if necessary. Although she may deserve it, in most cases punching her back would be excessive in terms of self defense.
Edit: Wow...this is why people don’t take this movement seriously..
[–]teeny_big_tree 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So if a puny man punched you, would you punch back?
[–]Do0ozy -4 points-3 points-2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The only reason I would punch someone back if they hit me once one on one is if I got mad or hurt. If the puny guy that punched me somehow made me mad enough or hurt me (knocked me down..etc..) I would punch him back.. If a girl hurt me who knows, but then it’d be self defense. .and we’re also getting to those very rare scenarios.. But if the girl just made me mad I probably wouldn’t punch her back. I guess you can call that sexism but I call that anger management made easier by a strong principle based on biology. Because I shouldn’t be punching either puny guys or regular women unless it really is self defense and not just hitting them back in anger.
[–]teeny_big_tree 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's a gender bias, I wouldn't say it's sexism. Violence is bad, but sometimes violence is needed to stop further violence. Just look out for yourself either way and remember that a true test of character is recognising your emotions before acting on them.

This is ironic. Entitlement is not when you expect people to agree with common sense aspects of a controversial issue. Or at least not try to silence you. Entitlement is when you think you should be able to Floyd Mayweather some chick just because she hits you with her cat paw.
[–]tmone 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Entitlement is when you expect eveyone to agree with you and when they don't, it's all their fault and their movement is shit.
You blame a whole movement (a thread btw that many are echoing exactly what you're saying) for the actions of a few disenting opinions.
Entitlement.

I didn’t expect people to agree, like I just said, I expected people to not try and silence an opinion they disagree with. An opinion that’s pretty essential to understand in order to make the attempted point. I didn’t blame the whole movement. I said that this is why people don’t take the movement seriously. Absolutely true. Again, really ironic that you’d bring up the world entitlement to describe me on a post I disagree with that is the embodiment of entitlement.
