Study finds that "manuscripts written by women as solo authors or coauthored by women were treated even more favorably by referees and editors" yet gets reported with the heading "no gender bias". Gender bias against men doesn't seem to count as gender bias!

Following a petition, Winchester University cancelled a talk with two men's rights activists in 2019. Here is the text of one of the talks (by William Collins) that were planned. It covers education, suffrage and coverture. It's disappointing that such views can't be expressed in such a forum.

95% of strip searches of children reported in England & Wales are of boys. This may or may not be an issue but I found it interesting that it was considered unfair that black children were more likely to be strip-searched but this huge gender disparity was barely mentioned in lots of media coverage.

So more male nurses and teachers right?

[–]thewindburner 47 points48 points49 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

so more equal prison sentences and equal child custody and equal help for homeless men and equal women in dangerous jobs.......

Yeah not holding my breath!

[–]Bland-fantasie 57 points58 points59 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The worst part of this is that there is no such thing as two equally qualified candidates. One of them will have more work experience, more relevant work experience, more education, more applicable education, better writing.

It’s a falsehood to suggest that there can be two equally qualified candidates.

[–]tjohn9999 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree somewhat no candidate will ever be exactly the same. However the weighting of their qualifications can both be so good that its basically the same. Or to put it another way both would be good choices for the job.

[–]Bland-fantasie 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is how they get their foot in the door to award jobs to those other than the most meritorious candidate.

The insidious part is they claim “it’s only in case of ties” or near ties, but that isn’t how everyone will apply it. They will use a wider margin. It’s not like they’ll be caught or punished; very much the opposite.

"It’s not that women don’t go into financial services. They do, and they are well represented across the general population within the industry. But somewhere along the line something happens that stops them from getting the top jobs"

further on:

"Also contributing to the problem is that fewer women apply for senior roles. The Central Bank’s analysis shows that only 31 per cent of applicants for pre-approval controlled function roles within regulated firms were female, and only 28 per cent of applicants for board seats were women."

It's called families, and women tend to find out climbing the corporate ladder sucks ass, and they can actually get away from it without judgment.

Pure madness.

They literally dictate who should be hired vased on sex and think they're combatting discrimination...

It's sickeningly Orwellian.

[+]KaptainKrunnch -45 points-44 points-43 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I think you need to read 1984 again. If two candidates are equally qualified, you hire the one that’s less represented in the company. This means you are always hiring the most qualified candidate. What’s the problem?

[–]pm_me_your_buttbulge 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What if the male identities as female? Does this mean that since they are trans that they are required to hire them because they are underrepresented? Even if they are otherwise 100% male in appearance and dress and just ticked the (F) checkbox?

This puts a very difficult conversation front and center.

[–]NeoVidia 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except, there is no measurement in which we can assert they are truly equal. Equal in this case is what is vague and abusable.

[–]critical_Bat 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is that an individual should not be treated worse because of a pre existing company structure because of excessive interest in certain characteristics.

My old school has announced that their gender balance will never go above 60:40. In this case it will “be for the benefit” of young men but better performing young women will be punished.

A gender quota only makes sense if you believe men and women are the same and that society causes all the difference. In politics the result will be even less power to the voters. Everyone has seen an election where a woman loses the top position or women overall lose positions it is called a setback for equality.

Another problem is that this will not be limited to “equally qualified” but also “similarly qualified” and “not that big of a difference in qualifications”.

A third problem is that bureaucracy and bloat will increase. It will always get bigger and Christine Lagarde for instance has said she wants quotas for other factors (I think it was sexuality and gender identity but I cant find the video). In addition to that more regulations always favors the existing leaders and this helps cement their place.

[–]jerohi 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is that, by doing that, you are discriminating based on sex.

[–]Ok-Inspection-5176 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So orwell wrote other stuff than 1984... Animal farm for example which i think was the reference made "some animals are more equal then others"

[–]Fast-Mongoose-4989 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It discrimination that's the problem.

[–]wntk[S] 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Overall, female representation in management-level applications increased by a marginal amount to 35 per cent in 2022, with women more likely to apply for what the bank calls “second-line-of-defence roles” such as head of compliance or head of anti-money laundering."

My interpretation of this is the type of jobs they are not applying for can involve extra hours either regularly or at least when there is some sort of an emergency. Why should men have to do most of the non-cushy jobs which could arise when there are gender quotas with women mainly only applying for the cushier jobs: women would need to be given preference in these (cushier jobs) to reach quotas.

[–]ERiC_693 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So basically women don't apply for top roles. So its not discrimination, women are represented in numbers they apply in.

And yet thats discrimination. Its obvious women are not applying because thry are having children in their 30s. This is a non problem that will be corrected if men were equal in family law etc...

Where is the EU directive pushing for equity in bricklaying or construction workers? Or garbage men? Or transmission tower maintenance?

[–]SouthernSeeker 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess the obvious question is to see how many genders the EU acknowledges, and how well represented they are.

Failing that, make friends on the board, and get current members to change how they identify. If they're going to be stupid, use their own against them.

[–]wntk[S] 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This EU directive is very likely to lead to gender discrimination:

"Companies must also disclose their qualification criteria should the unsuccessful candidate request it and must make a firm commitment to reaching gender balance among their executive directors. If they don’t, penalties (decided on by individual countries) will apply."

[–]SchwiftedMetal 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What is “equality” here? Like 50/50 representation? What percentage of women actually want high banking jobs?

[–]gtsio541 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is Equity pushing its way through. Nope, equality isn't enough. The under-represented want more. Since it's so easy for men, they need more to make the outcome equal

[–]Sir_vendetta 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is all about the empowerment of women, but where does it stop? You already can see more and more companies giving jobs based on the "gender" and not qualifications. The current "political correctness trend" is to prioritise women over men on support of equality, and that's causing inequality itself by discriminating men with exactly the same qualifications.

[–]Lightning77Plus 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's like they want us to start "identifying" as other things so we can at least re-level the playing field...

[–]ijustdontcare74 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And this is why I keep my number of employees below a certain threshold, whereby I’m not subject to meddling by local government on this sort of bullshit. I employ only men and and proud to do so. I’ve never once had a hostile work environment, not one incident of conflict nor any kind of grievance filed between employees….in over 15yrs of running my business. I’d rather accept lower profits and keep the company free from bureaucracy than chase the money. Would I ever hire a woman….no, no f’ing way. I’ve worked in large corporations and seen first hand how toxic females can be to other women and how men get played by women who know how to game the HR grievance system. Never again.

[–]Wld_N_frE 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this shit is happening rampantly…of the last 20 positions hired in my org 16 were women and none of the men hired were new just shuffling…this is major discrimination. All but a couple of the applicants were more qualified

[–]vaguebiscuits 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

So, quite clearly discrimination then. If both candidates are equally qualified then it's a wash, and if the guidance is to only look at sex? Not character, extra curricular activities, drive, motivation, leadership etc. No soft skills, just xx > xy. Considering how discriminating this way (on sex/gender) is currently against the law, I'd like to know how exactly there is a patriarchy that favours men.

Well if that's the way it needs to be, time for more women to get in the sewers and on the building sites. Collect the bins, fix potholes, drive HGVs. It's all very well looking at the top but what about everywhere else ie where most people work? Boys don't have male teachers, men dont have male psychiatrists and therapists

[–]NameIs-Already-Taken 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I look forward to an EU directive that pushes for women to be involved in less glamorous jobs, like bricklaying, sewage treatment, truck driving and slaughterhouses. Except it will never come. Women want laws that mean women get the top jobs.

[–]aknabi 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

China/Russia/India/Mid East must be laughing and sayin “we don’t need to do a thing to bring the west down… their feminists are doing the work for us!”

[–]Longjumping-Plant173 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

feminism in India is rampant.

[–]Drekalo 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't understand this. So because women apply less, when they do apply, they should be preferentially selected?

[–]Morden013 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Complete and utter one-sided bullshit.

I didn't see anybody raise a question of a woman-only company being formed. Where was all this talk about a gender being suppressed?

What about woman-only seminars, events...etc?

[–]funiduni -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Forget the women, the real issue is us minorities never getting to the top ranks.

[–]LiveComfortable3228 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was a director in a tech consulting company. This was exactly the promotion guidance we had. When we had two equally qualified candidates for a position, the woman would take the spot.

I like this version better as it is not specific on sex, just the less represented candidate.
