In Malta a total of 69 people are elected to parliament during elections. Malta is considered a progressive and liberal EU state but people still don't vote for women during general elections. In fact during last elections, held a month ago, only 4 women were elected out of 69 members of parliament.

An artificial mechanism kicked in for the first time so that 12 extra seats were given to women even though they were not elected democratically.

One woman candidate spurned this mechanism and used it to elect a man instead. This man was a candidate who was elected democratically but would have been pushed aside by the 'gender corrective mechanism'.
