For ANYONE considering a vasectomy, please go research the long onset unresolvable pain that happens as a side effect to a significant subset of guys who get this done. ABSOLUTELY never gonna happen to this guy. The real answer to whether or not this guy's opinion is valid is ask him 10 or 15 years later if he still thinks it was a great choice and is pain free.

Vasectomy is permanent sterilisation, and anyone telling you otherwise is full of shit; A "reversal" doesn't mean what you think it means (they can "fix" the vas deferens, but that doesn't mean everything will work again) and there's no guarantee that that will even be successful. Do not rely on being able to change your mind in the future.

Another factor to consider is the common (>1%) to very common (>10%) side effect of chronic pain which everyone seems to ignore for some reason. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As a med student, I agree. Vasectomies are great if you never want kids. However, please realize there's an increased rate of some cancers as a result. I'm going into oncology and figured I should make anyone reading aware of that.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always work. I actually became pregnant from someone who had been fixed. (yes we were in a relationship, and we raised the kid together, though we are not together now). He had had the operation done, and though I do not know where the fault was (dunno, maybe the doc botched stitching) but I ended up giving birth to our son. The kid, btw, is now 30.

I know I have extreme opinion on genitalia but I see vasectomies as genital mutilation same with circumcision. There’s a lot of risks regardless of how low they are and studies have linked testicular cancer as a possible risk. I’m not interested in losing my balls while purposely destroying my sperm. They’re practically unreversable once you’ve had it for too long so it’s the same as tattoos the moment you hit fifty you’re gonna regret having muscle man on your ass. Also if certain men are insecure about their “size” then a vasectomy is the last thing they’d want because as it doesn’t directly shrink your shaft it still doesn’t grow as much. Lot of reasons to not get one no matter how safe it is and no matter how low the percentages of risk are. Especially if you’ve looked into things like lasic eye surgery as that’s meant to be super safe yet certain unlucky people now go through pain all day every day in their face which is the WORST type of pain with pretty much no fix.

And on top of all that, just like circumcision it is unnecessary

All young men should get vasectomies imho. The fertility clinic can keep your sperm frozen for up to 50 years and it only costs $100/a per batch.

Get your semen frozen....pay the cheap annual maintenance fees to avoid major problems.

Then...when/if you ever want kids...they can thaw your boys out and inseminate your wife.

I have friends who've done this (25 years ago in some cases) and some who are just getting into it. I'm counseling my sons to do it.

Its just the smart move these days.

Look, most of male semen is comprised of stuff other than sperm and isn't made in the testes. (seminal vesicles, mostly lecithin) A vasectomy cuts the tube in two carrying the sperm to the rest of the system (short name vas). Used to be done with a scalpel. They've found that not using a scalpel has fewer complications so the trend is to not use a scalpel anymore.

Some have determined/believe that there are fewer complications if rather than "plug" the vas coming "upstream" from the testes so the sperm has no where to go, there are less long-term complications by leaving the upstream vas open so the daily sperm production can seep into the scrotum and be absorbed and discarded by the body as waste. There are no long term studies I'm aware of as to the chemical compounds now being released the inside of the body having no adverse effects. It took the FDA about a hundred years to figure out hydrogenated seed oils (trans fats, Blue Bonnet margarine, Crisco) directly caused heart disease. I'm not holding my breath for a definitive answer on this chemical issue. From Wikipedia: "Mature sperm (and their antigens) emerge significantly after immune tolerance is set in infancy. Since sperm are antigenically different from self-tissue, a male animal can react immunologically to his own sperm. The male can make antibodies against them." Hmmm, after 20 or 30 years of this, what could possibly go wrong? And BTW, often if the upstream vas is cauterized at surgery, over years it deteriorates and starts leaking all the same anyway. Hence the possibility of immuno-reactions from the procedure way delayed after it's done.

Informed decision. Some don't wanna be informed. Don't try and confuse me with the details. I know what I want. Fine, go ahead. I'm not stupid, ill informed, or have an axe to grind just because I want to offer information to the fellow members of my gender.

This post advocates in a Men's Rights subreddit that male surgical sterilization is a great idea to protect the general male population from "getting your life destroyed by the family court system or a woman". All people like me are saying is that a guy should weigh the available information and make an informed decision as to the overall risk/benefit in their life. And that men in our culture have a totally legitimate right to hold the position that surgical sterilization is not their best choice in the fight against misandry in the American judicial system or the general female population.
