Boys ahead in math, engineering, tech = Male Privilege. Hundreds of millions of dollars of tax pumped in to correct this atrocity, university engineering/physics depts shamed for having more male students etc....

These competitions require pure skill, control, fast decision-making, and precise logical thinking alongside a deep knowledge of programming normally. Since there is no space for emotional, subjective manipulation, and self victimization, it will likely never attract women

as with most things it's a matter of statistics and standard deviation.

if you have participants that are 90% male, and we assume men and woman are equally distributed across the talent bell curve, then it's 9X more likely that the winner/smartest will come from the group that had 90% of the participation.

Male brains are predisposed to logic. They have greater brain laterlisation (that is, focus on one side/area of the brain) than women (hence the "men are worse at multitasking" thing).

The Broca's and Wernicke's areas associated with speech and language in social contexts are not as dense as women's, but men have better cerebellums (visual-spacial processing, memory) and corpus callosums, a white matter nerve tract connecting both hemispheres resulting in faster thinking. Denser corpus callosums are especially common in left-handed and autistic people. As we all know, left-handedness and autism is more common in men.

Simon Baron-Cohen (whose studies are INCREDIBLY interesting!) proposed autism as just an "extreme male brain" as it has all of the things I mentioned above but completely maxxed out, resulting in poor language/social abilities but excellent logical abilities (although, interestingly, autistic people are more likely to have a large vocabulary and use formal/complex words than neurotypical people).

Baron-Cohen found that newborn babies who look at geometric patterns and objects for >80% of a specified time rather than faces are 100% likely to be autistic. Hence "men = things, women = people".

Therefore, by sheer statistics, women are not worse at logic-related skills such as tech and maths, but they are less likely to be interested in them due to the aforementioned "male brain type" being uncommon in women.

This is the point James Damore tried to make which resulted in him being fired from Google (read up on him if you haven't already. He's amazing. I watched an interview with him as well and he explained everything wonderfully). It's a good thing Steven Pinker (one of my academic heroes) supports him.

Hackathons are like the worst example of a fair STEM competition. The winners are always those who have the best presentation or most hyped idea, regardless of how shitty it is implemented.

If it was fair and transparent, and based on clearly delineated outcomes in the hackathon, are you claiming that the objective and principled victory through merit should be upended for equity purposes?
