At a recent hackathon (for non techies -"hackathons" are like a day or week long competition in which you frame an idea and build a working prototype, could be apps, robots, hacking a site etc - it's an open competition that allows teams to win real stuff, job offers or cash) i noticed that while we had a fairly gender diverse list of participants the top winning teams were exclusively male dominated. I started looking back at past years and I kept seeing the same trend - a bunch of nerdy looking white, Asian and Indian boys. Despite the organizers making a huge push & sponsorship for women to attend and compete - when it comes to all out fair tests that demonstrate raw obsessive achievement is there a gender pattern ?
