I walked into the urologist's office in Florida. He was required by state law to try to talk me out of it as I had never had kids. I told him that the prospect of chaperoning a Sweet 16 party at the age of 60 was not a particularly appealing one to me. He then asked me what I wanted to listen to on the boom box while he got to work. I chose Van Halen.

yeah i am married, 28 years old - in the state of california i would need a notarized document from my wife saying that she consents so i didnt bother ... i moved to NY recently ... in new york state it was less of a hassle but they suggested we go through counselling before making the decision, now my wife is making me wait until my daughter is born (shes due in 2 weeks) before moving forward with it because she thinks its "bad luck" to get sterilized while shes still pregnant ... my personal opinion is the fucking government needs to stay the fuck out of the bedroom in either case male or female contraception ...

When I got mine in Florida, I had to wait 30 days because I was under the age of 25.

I also had to take a 30 minute course on how this is more than likely a permanent procedure.

Got it done anyway.

There are a few sites digging to see if there have really ever been any laws requiring spousal permission for vasectomies. One journalists has a asked lawyers specializing in reproductive laws and the lawyer says that no state has a spousal consent law. So far it appears to be only rumor about it being a LEGAL requirement.

However, doctors have the freedom to impose their own rules for determining who they operate on and it appears that that is what is happening when some require spousal consent letters . Also doctors have to obey vague laws about doing "due diligence" when it comes to screening patients for non-reversal elective surgeries and some doctors interpret this differently. Some feel their personal interview with the patient is good enough to determine if the patient is making a sound decision, and other doctor may choose do do more such as implement a waiting period or an interview with a spouse.

Of course any MRA should see the violation of personal freedom by spousal permission requests and that's why I recommend the MRM start informing these doctors about how morally wrong their policies are and placing the doctors on some sort of public list.

In a way this is sort of understandable though if you were married and you want a vasectomy it only seems right if you both agree on it

Just a theory,

since a very high percentage of pregnancies are fathered by someone other than who the mother says it is, and in fact doctors often help cover up such lies, getting the wife's consent, is protection from future trauma to the husband, or a false accusation against the doctor for improperly performing the vasectomy.
