This is great. I hate all the things talking about how childish/helpless/uselessly inept husbands are portrayed. Look at almost every TV sitcom, the husband is a bumbling idiot, and the wife has to save the day every time.

[–]chesterfeildsofa[S] 25 points26 points27 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

That didn't bother me (though it is aggravating) as much as whoever made this twisted it from being a "this is sexist towards men" into a "this is sexist to women" issue. Like when someone says "Not all men" and feminists say "thats not the point, stop making this all about you"

[–]I_FUCK_UP_RECIPES 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It was posted by everydayfeminism's facebook page right? I wouldn't expect it not to be making it about women, but at least they're helping men as part of their goal of helping women.

[–]soulless_ging 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Isn't it sexist toward both, though?

Whoever made it seemed to think that the only way to make women feel better was to make fun of men, and that's demeaning to both sexes.

[–]FigNinja 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. Plus that attitude is a relationship killer. It ends up with both a man and a woman unhappy.

[–]chesterfeildsofa[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Its only sexist when a man demeans a woman. When a woman does it to a man, its feminism and they get to feel empowered. Its fucking ridiculous

[–]ladylurkedalot 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, actually. When a woman demeans a man that's just as sexist. I think both the top and bottom text of your post are bullshit.

The top part is bullshit because adults should be treated like adults. There are men and women both who think this way -- wives and husbands who think their partner is inept because they're not experts in the other gender's traditional roles. The wife helpless in face of car trouble or handling money, or the husband who doesn't know how to cook or take care of the kids, for example. It's used a lot in fish-out-of-water humor, but it's really sexist. It's certainly no good for a real relationship.

The bottom part doesn't even make sense to me, trying to turn it around into some kind of 'because Patriarchy' bullshit? I've got no clue, but it's just as sexist.

[–]Rethgil -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do you only ever come on here to derail male rights debates? That's all your posts ever do. Dont you have alife or something?

[–]chesterfeildsofa[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Questioning whether or not something is sexist all around isn't derailing the debate

[–]Drusylla 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"thats not the point, stop making this all about you"

That's something a narcissist would say. Makes you wonder about those kind of feminists.

[–]Vanriel 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Like when someone says "Not all men" and feminists say "thats not the point, stop making this all about you"

Had some annoying feminist say that to me a while back, and i was like "yeah, but since your disparaging blokes, and i AM a bloke, it is all about me"

Pissed me off something chronic because it was at work, so she filed a complaint with the manager saying that i had been abusive to her (complete bullshit) and had disciplinary action filed against me. It got sorted out soon after, but man was i angry. Afterwards when the manager apologized to me I told him next time before you file an action against someone, maybe just MAYBE you ought to check both sides of the story and see any witnesses who were there, and hear what they have to say.

[–]icecow 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You nailed it. Groups of women are constantly making sexist statements about men and framing it as though it's a "perfect example" of how men are being sexist against women. Most of it doesn't make sense at face value. The message is "I just fucked under men's reputations again because I can"

[–]enjoycarrots 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I saw this cross my own facebook feed and had a similar reaction. It's good that they see the "bumbling man" stereotype as a sexist one. But it's telling it is only framed as an issue by how it harms women.

I'm glad they see it as a troubling stereotype, at least.

[–]icecow 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I like Jim Gaffgan so I watched his show, but didn't like it. It seems to be yet another sitcom where "the husband is a bumbling idiot, and the wife has to save the day every time."

I think Jim Gaffgan's role is based on many men's notion that being well adjusted and humble means being self-depricating, admitting to mistakes, etc. Even appearing to have direction or will power should be eliminated to avoid appearing dominate/domineering. I think that's why so many men are perfectly willing to be cast in to these sitcom loser man roles. They think being spineless assures the woman is not being oppressed.

[–]mattreyu 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As an extreme example, look at Jerry Sanchez on Rick & Morty

[–]Longjohn_Server 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You could always stop watching sitcoms. All you're doing is boosting their ratings.

[–]mattreyu 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't really, I don't even have cable. I'm familiar enough with pop culture and I occasionally catch stuff when I'm hanging out with friends though.

[–]FigNinja 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course. However, what concerns me about the prevalence of the Idiot Dad character is kids growing up watching that. As an adult, I can look at it as a feminism-driven backlash and change the channel. (Tough I think it's gone beyond backlash at this point and taken on a life of its own.) Little kids absorb and internalize a lot. That model of a family is seriously damaged.

It was actually an article about Idiot Dad that drew me to this sub in the first place. I hate that my nephews are growing up seeing this. If I had nieces, I'd hate it for them, too.

[–]Rethgil -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, and if I dont buy a McDonald's for lunch tomorrow I can save the planet.

[–]spazzymcgee11 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Have you ever watched a film? Or like, a drama? Who saves the day in one of the IMDB top 100?

[–]mattreyu 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I specifically pointed out TV sitcoms, which are (more or less) depictions of families. Most of the top 100 films are based on things that are fantastical and not rooted in ordinary life. That's a false equivalence.

[–]spazzymcgee11 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fair point.

[–]iongantas 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I dislike both the original picture blurb and the response to it.

[–]danpilon 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Me too. It seems to me to be yet another attempt to make sexism against men actually just sexism against women in disguise.

[–]whatpaper 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

Talked about male work related deaths in class a while ago.

The consensus was that men are stupid and don't use the safety equipment.

So yeah, it does carry into the professional world and yeah, it's hugely damaging.

I hate this type of imagery and I don't care why people are opposed to it. I just want it gone.

As a side note, it was men who were jovially joking about how much men suck. Working class men who definitely don't identify as feminist.

As a gender we really need to stop using self deprecation as a self defence tool if we want to combat disposability in any useful fashion.

Where did you find that image? Is there an address I can sign?

[–]alclarkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The consensus was that men are stupid and don't use the safety equipment.

Did anyone ask for any evidence of this? Or was it just a presumption, and if so how is it not mind-blowingly sexist?

[–]whatpaper 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did anyone ask for any evidence of this?

I was there, weren't I? :D

[–]xNOM 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I dunno, it can be a coping mechanism when it's funny and a two way street. Unfortunately, we know it isn't a two way street. Comments about women scraping the car up against a concrete column in the parking garage are "sexist" these days. What happened to women who can take a joke? Can't we admit men and women have their own special stupid things?

[–]whatpaper 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The problem isn't that the men joke. The problem is that when they joke, the joke is taken as the truth. How could it not? How can the society at large see that men are hurting if the men are laughing?

Public funds go to sensitivity training instead of increasing workplace safety because the men don't complain. Men go to shit jobs that kill them because that is how they gain value as humans in our society. That is fundamentally fucked up. A male life really isn't worth any less than a female one, so let's stop pretending like it is.

No, I am unwilling to accept that men are just built to be suicidal and there is nothing we should do about that. Not even if it would mean we would get to laugh at the funny way women drive.

I am a man. When another man goes "hur, dur, men are happy with their lot. The reason we die is because we deserve to", that means there is less funding to research testicular cancer, that I could one day get. That my future sons might get. I am very much not okay with that.

If we are nice and stable, jovial and content with our lot, nothing will ever change. If blacks had behaved like men do we would still be enslaving them.

On balance, the ability to joke about women weights very, very little.

[–]misterdoctorproff 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I guarantee none of these "blue collar non feminists" are well adjusted. When men denigrate their gender, they denigrate themselves as individuals. This lack of self esteem is ironically not at all attractive to women. I would wager that these guys in your class had depression/anxiety and very likely low testosterone, which isn't surprising considering the hostile environment for males that is education at all levels.

[–]Funcuz 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I dunno...I have trouble getting worked up about this sort of thing. Come to think of it, the longer I'm here the more I see similarities with the feminism we've all come to know and love.

I mean, look at it : Whoever made that is basically saying what we always say. So what are we nitpicking it for ? Because we're on the same page as some magical feminist who actually practices what she shrieks ?

This reminds me of when feminists look at a statistic about some major disadvantage men face and turn it into an issue that somehow disadvantages women.

[–]chesterfeildsofa[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This reminds me of when feminists look at a statistic about some major disadvantage men face and turn it into an issue that somehow disadvantages women.

thats exactly what this is

[–]FigNinja 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This reminds me of when feminists look at a statistic about some major disadvantage men face and turn it into an issue that somehow disadvantages women.

Yep. One of the things that really gets me about that is they will look at a problem they caused and blame men for it. They're more concerned about the drama of victimhood and oppression. They value it as an identity and need to preserve it, so they ignore something that's staring them in the face. We're all in this together. Hurting men hurts society. So, yeah, if they pile a bunch of unfair disadvantages on men, it's going to come back to bite women somewhere.

At first I thought it was going somewhere good, then they brought up power.

It also bothers me that he has a wedding band on his right hand and her left hand is bare.

[–]outhouse_steakhouse 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was nodding along with this until I got about halfway through, then... ugh. "Women have always been the primary victims of negative stereotypes against men." There is nothing that feminists can't twist into women being the eternal helpless victims.

[–]Keiichi81 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism proposes that men are simultaneously all-powerful oppressors who control the world and conspire to keep women down, and woefully inept, weak, fragile creatures who need constant mollycoddling and supervision from their female superiors without which they would be incapable of surviving.

[–]MenandBoysareGood 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It used to be that society backlashed over the treatment of women as children. Today you can talk about men as being childish and useless and it makes for lots of cheers and humor.

[–]Tomppeli 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Many men on the top because they fought their way there (most of them anyway). Men described as idiots because so many people, and feminists in particular, have this stereotype and spread it.

These are two distictly separate phenomena. Stereotypes are something you can't do anything about because they hit each and everyone within the stereotyped group.

[–]TheRationalChannel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's funny that I have heard feminists complain about being portrayed as the intelligent ones in those adverts whilst the husband is an idiot. I can't recall why they hated it but for some reason yes they did.

[–]chavelah 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Possibly because we are offended by the assumption that we would marry and have children with idiots?

[–]alclarkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because, feminists.

[–]creamyfrog 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow are you really getting offended by a joke? GG men's rights subreddit, great first impression. I thought you were better than this. Consider this an aggressive Milo finger wagging.

[–]javi404 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This bullshit pisses me off as well. As someone who does the dishes and empties the trash, I take great offence to those fucking posts. One of the reasons I don't bother with social media.

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ask yourself a simple question. Who are the target audiences these things are mostly made for? Who are the adverts in the ad breaks aimed at? Are the things being sold generally female items and services, or bought mostly by women? Add on to this the same question regarding white knights or gays.

Now. Final question. With this in mind, why do you think men in such shows are portrayed this negative way? Because it panders to, and reflects, the views of the audience they are targeting with their shows and adverts. Remember, media is not about entertainment. It is a business, about SELLING things. Selling advertising space to corporations to sell products to people. No high audience share means no paying advertisers means the network cancels your show. If it is public broadcasting, it is in the hands of the politicians, whatever they tell you. They also need to appeal to the biggest most gullible section of people to keep their jobs and get elected. Fear is the biggest seller. In other words "men are stupid and dangerous, now buy this"!

[–]DavidByron2 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes it's the usual "women are the biggest victims of war" (because their male husbands died) syndrome.

[–]xNOM -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL as if that guy had trouble feeding and clothing himself before that parasite latched onto him. The idea that the way women take care of men is in any way comparable to the way men take care of women, is a joke. If they were that similar, men wouldn't be dying 6 years sooner.
