while I've never in my life heard of a rapist defending themselves by blaming hormones, I've personally heard a rather large number of women excuse their assaulting someone because of them.

I have never heard someone excuse rape like this, she’s obviously stating a strawman. But I have heard people excuse women’s behavior on hormones.

Whoever wrote this is giving off a lot of linguistic clues that they are lying in the last sentence.

First, this entire statement is what is called a non-denial denial or a Watergate denial*. It sounds like she is saying she has never raped or assaulted anyone, right? But if you read it carefully, she isn't actually saying that. She is just saying her hormones didn't make her think of doing it. The sentence could still be technically true if she raped someone after thinking about it for some other reason, or if she raped someone thoughtlessly.
Second red flag- distancing language. What is that "going and" doing in there? Why make "someone" the object of the sentence? You could drop both of those things from the sentence altogether and it would still have the same meaning. People feeling guilty often subconsciously phrase their sentences in ways that imply their own actions took place away from them and/or they did not know the other people involved.
Third red flag- qualifying language. Why start with "**But I promise you*\*"? Again, it adds nothing to the sentence. People who know they are lying or intentionally misleading see a need to emphasize they are telling the truth. When you aren't doing those things, you usually just state your point because it doesn't occur to you that anyone would doubt it.
Finally, there is the weird preface to the statement. Repeating a (strawman) allegation in it's entirety for no apparent reason. Going into lots of detail we don't need, eg- hormones make her cry- what's that got to do with anything?

*Edit- In my initial comment I erroneously conflated non-contracted denials with non-denial denials. A non-contracted denial is one in which whole words are used rather than contractions. I think there was a case of a woman becoming extremely aggressive during her period and once they found out all her "rage" incidents were tied to the hormones if it all they get her lesser sentences for repeat offences. Mind her she was given drugs to help it, but she chose not to take them and so went back to abusing people.

Hormones are an excuse to be a dick, regardless of gender.

The reason I think this is misguided is this. Take the analogy with pedophiles. Some percentage of the male (to keep things simple) population is sexually attracted to children. They battle with this inclination every time they see a child as much as a straight man does when he sees a curvy model walking by.

The point is: very few of these pedophiles actually rape children. They might fantasize about it (and then feel terrible about doing so), yes. But they also know how egregious it would be to do so - let alone the consequences that likely await them if they ever did.

To actually attack a child, you need to combine pedophelia with a striking lack of empathy and impulse control - in other words, traits we associate with strong narcissistic personality disorders and downright sociopathy.

I think the same goes for sexual assault, at least the kind we would all classify as such (not overwheening nagging for sex, for instance).

Is this a controversial line of thought? You seldom hear it out there.

Uhhh... rape is caused by a person deciding to have sex with someone without their consent. That's pretty much just it.

It's not hormones, it's not alcohol, it's not the way someone dresses, it's not that someone just can't resist... it's that they either didn't ask, asked someone who couldn't give a meaningful answer, or asked and ignored the answer.

I mean Jesus it's not that hard.

Notice I say people. Men can rape and be raped. Women can rape and be raped. It isn't evil men vs. scared women... it's shitty rapists regardless of their gender vs normal people regardless of their gender. Hormones have fuckall to do with it, and introducing the argument is just a strawman.

There's actually been a plethora of research on the relationship of hormones and rape which, despite findings showing little correlation, speaks to the sheer volume this possibility has been considered. On a related note, I have also met the rare specimen that tried using biological reasons like hormones as an argument for rape... not the everyday joe, but definitely an individual committed to his whacked version of "science"
