I’m currently in a situation where I’ve been told that a woman I was previously in a relationship with is carrying a child who may be mine.

The relationship ended after repeated dishonesty, contradictory explanations and threats that made it impossible for me to rely solely on her word. Because of that history, I have requested a paternity test before accepting legal or parental responsibility.

What troubles me is how quickly a man in this situation can be portrayed as cruel, absent or unwilling to take responsibility simply because he asks for proof.

A woman has certainty that a child is biologically hers. A man does not. Yet men are often expected to become emotionally attached, participate in major decisions and potentially make financial or legal commitments before receiving confirmation.

I am not trying to avoid fatherhood. If the child is mine, I intend to meet my responsibilities and be involved as much as circumstances allow. But responsibility should follow certainty, especially when trust has already been destroyed.

Requesting a paternity test is not abandoning a child who has been confirmed to be yours. It is asking whether the responsibility being placed on you is actually yours in the first place.

Why is that request so often treated as an attack on the mother rather than a basic form of protection for the man?

Has anyone here dealt with uncertain paternity, pressure to accept responsibility without proof, or being judged for requesting a test?
