Well it's something that is done specifically to boys and not girls, cutting off a healthy part of someone else's body without their consent is a violation of their rights, and since this is a violation of rights of exclusively males (in the West), we call it a men's rights issue.

Female circumcision, or female genital mutilation as it’s better known, is commonly understood as cruelty. It is also performed for “religious” or “tradition” purposes, although since it mostly isn’t “white” religions it’s considered to just be done out of barbarianism by most western cultures. There are different types of FGM, so going forward I am specifically referring to the removal of the clitoral hood/clitoris/labia, because that is most comparable to male circumcision. As others have pointed out, it is generally accepted medical knowledge that male circumcision reduces or dulls sexual pleasure. The purpose of male circumcision is stated to be cleanliness, but that is a known medical fallacy that continues to be pushed in a lot of western countries. These are both stated purposes of FGM. So, since medically or scientifically we know that it reduces sexual pleasure, and does not really improve cleanliness, they are functionally the same regardless of what religions try to claim. Just like FGM, male circumcision is most often performed unwillingly on a child not of an age to understand what is happening to them enough to give true consent. It is a pervasive issue specifically in American culture that this RELIGIOUS tradition has become the societal norm regardless of a families religion, and has led to inaccurate medical information being taught to young men about their own bodies in school or even portrayed in scientific literature. I believe in religious freedom so I am absolutely not judging anyone on their religious beliefs, but just objectively these are the facts on the matter. I’ll leave you to ponder the implications of a society that considers female circumcision to be mutilation, and male circumcision to be the expected societal norm.

Health and such aside, it's posted a lot because it's a very clear display of double standards of an issue feminism tends to take extremely seriously, but only when it's women. It's posted a lot to bring visibility to the fact boys go through it too (and substantially more to the point it's normalized).

In short, it's an argument that perfectly aligns with female mutilation in terms of the act and arguments against it, but for boys it gets near zero attention, despite being virtually identical. Magically the medical facts apply to girls, but not boys.

The penile foreskin is a natural and integral part of the normal male genitalia. The foreskin has a number of important protective and sexual functions. It protects the penile glans against trauma and contributes to the natural functioning of the penis during sexual activity. Ancient historic accounts and recent scientific evidence leave little doubt that during sexual activity the foreskin is a functional and highly sensitive, erogenous structure, capable of providing pleasure to its owner and his potential partners.

As clinical sexologists, we are concerned about the human rights aspects associated with the practice of non-therapeutic circumcision of young boys. To cut off the penile foreskin in a boy with normal, healthy genitalia deprives him of his right to grow up and make his own informed decision. Unless there are compelling medical reasons to operate before a boy reaches an age and a level of maturity at which he is capable of providing informed consent, the decision to alter the appearance, sensitivity and functionality of the penis should be left to its owner, thus upholding his fundamental rights to protection and bodily integrity.

Every person’s right to bodily integrity goes hand in hand with his or her sexual autonomy. By signing this statement we support the resolution of September 30, 2013, issued by the Nordic ombudsmen for children, and the resolution of October 1, 2013, issued by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, in which governments are urged to take the necessary measures to protect children’s bodily integrity with regard to non-therapeutic genital surgery.

It's nothing wrong with being circumcised. What's wrong with it is forcing babies to go through with it when they can't consent. They get tortured and alter their brain, because of how much pain the baby is in.

Circumcision at its heart is the epitome of men's rights. A poor defenseless baby gets an unnecessary surgery performed on them just because other people wanted them to have no foreskin, all because they're a male. A'course FGM is gonna be banned but not MGM. They have to live the rest of their lives in either delusion or pain because of the choices of others, which continue to be justified under such things as religion, "health benefits" (0.03% decrease in the chances of catching HIV), and personal preference. It is purely a men's rights issue of the highest caliber, a perfect representation of the struggles of men everywhere and how society doesn't give one fuck about it

I'm not here to debate whether or not circumcision is equal to FGM, but the fact that people are okay with hacking off the most sensitive bit of a A FUCKING NEWBORN BABY so long there is a penis is absolutely the epitome of disgusting inhumanity. Why is it, that nicking a girls clitoral hood isn't okay, but chopping of the most sensitive bit (foreskin) of a boy is okay?

This to me speaks of male apathy. Screw adult men, the fact that society cannot even sympathise with newborn males is utterly sad and despicable. Even newborn males aren't spared. How do you expect us to not care? I was circumcised as a child, and I feel violated and mutilated, bereft of something I was born with. How do you expect me to not care?

I have met two men who had to have circumcision done when they were kids because of phimosis, and it seems like it was a really traumatic experience for both of them. They were toddlers when they had their foreskin removed.

Seems to me that, rarily, there is medical reason to go through with circumcision, but doctors don’t seek less invasive alternatives that would be just as effective for most people.

I’m not knowledgeable in this topic, I must say. But I do agree that if religion is not a legitimate reason to circumcise girls, it shouldn’t be for boys either. It should be seen as just as unethical for sure.

Also, I don’t think parents should have the option to choose what happens with their child’s genitals. This goes for men, women and intersex people. It’s mutilation, and ignorant parents shouldn’t have the right to make such important decisions that affect deeply a person’s life. Specially without proper medical reason to do so.

I just want to say I really disagree with the tendency you see here of understanding the problem of circumcision only against FGM. You'll find people in this community will often speak of men's issues as if they're just a reaction to women's issues or to feminism. I find this totally misguided and pointless. It's as if they're not really worried about circumcision but are just dying to point out double standards.

That being said, no one should be allowed to cut pieces of you out if not strictly necessary for medical reasons. If you want to do it to yourself when you're old enough, that's your choice. But no one should impose that on a baby who can't chose, understand or defend itself and who'll have to live with that his entire life.

I saw you asked whether there are negative consequences from being circumcised. In my view that kind of misses the point as well. There are arguments as to why being circumcised may be a disadvantage, but that's really secondary, in my opinion. Do I have the right to cut, say, your earlobes off if I can argue that it doesn't have a "negative impact"? See what I mean? The negative impact is secondary. The primary issue is that you have no right to mutilate someone.

Removing part of the penis forcibly, and without any genuine medical need, is the deliberate infliction of a sexual injury on another. No one gets a free card on inflicting injuries on children, whatever the 'reason'

circumcisions are carried out for the same 'reasons' in the cultures that practice both. The oft-repeated line about FGM having no religious basis only applies to religions with religious texts (primarily abrahamic religions)...so ignores any religion not text-based (ie ignores all indigenous religions). For example, for the Dogon and Bambara peoples, fgm and male circumcision are both religious practices (reenacting the coupling of the supreme creator and sky-God Amma with the Earth Mother) and cultural ones. However, Dogon and Bambara immigrants are still not legally permitted to carry out their religious female genital cutting practices in western countries. If (forced) genital cutting of females is illegal even when a religious practice; (forced) genital cutting of males as a religious practice cannot be defended. Furthermore, almost without exception, all cultures that practice FGM also practice forced male genital cutting, for the same 'reasons ', using the same tools, under the same conditions. The exact same words are used for FGM as for Male Circumcision in cultures such as those below.

It's not right that anybody would do any kind of medical procedure on a child (that isn't necessary for their health). And in many countries outside the US, definitely many countries in Europe, it barely exists at all except for the muslim and jewish communities.

Unfortunately in the US it's kinda the norm for people to circumcise their baby boys for some strange reason, you can google it and see the history behind it.

I need to point out to you though OP, that on this sub, people like to blame feminism for every issue that affects men and that's probably why circumcision gets brought up so often here. Obviously feminism did not cause circumcision to be a thing in the US, but please be careful of people trying to blame it on that

I think a lot of dude on this sub have this wierd fantasy of being victim of oppression and that they see circumsition as something fucked like excisions so they have something to be angry about.

Honestly it’s so funny to read such outrage when really most circumcisions are either done for religious or health reasons. There’s alot of guys out here born with a foreskin too tight and a surgery is necessary in order to avoid the nastiest infections in the future. Feel free to google the plethora of problems that can arise from within your prepuce if left un treated !

It really boils down to personal hygiene but being circumcised also reduce the risk of uti / std by a slight margin since you don’t have an extra layer to take care of.

Circumcision reduces the risk of getting STDs, HIV, and penile cancer. It also reduces the risk of urinary tract infections. Circumcised men clear HPV infections more quickly too.

The uncircumcised penis is less sanitary and the excess foreskin traps moisture and bacteria, so skin infections like balantits are more common in uncircumcised men.

Most American men are circumcised, I'm glad I am. I suffer no ill effects. This is a non-issue.

How is it not about men's rights? Male babies got a part of their penis cut off without their consents. And infant circumcision removed 5 major parts of a healthy penis.

Botched circumcision is much more common than people think and botched circumcision can lead to death or even the mutilation of the whole penis. There are so many male babies losing their whole penis because of botched circumcision.
