Question: Sweden has a reputation abroad as an egalitarian society, almost a feminist paradise. Isn't that true?  Answer: No, it's not. I work with rape victims so I often see the dark underbelly of our country. Of course, we have reached many goals and women have more choice today than they did 30 years ago, but we are far from equal.  Question: What kinds of reasons do men tend to give for taking up more space than women on subways, buses, and trains?  Answer: It's everything from "scrotum sweat is unpleasant," to "I have the right to sit comfortably," and "it's physically impossible for me to sit differently because I have a penis."  Question: What would you say to those claiming that, in the grand scheme of things, this issue is a "luxury problem"?  My point is that this is part and parcel of the kind of oppression that leads to women being raped, getting lower salaries, and being exposed to violence in relationships.

Yes, sitting comfortably on a bus will literally lead to rape.

I like how no one ever brings up the frustrating frequency of women who think their purse/bags need a whole seat to itself. I keep my purse on my lap - hell, if I get a full load of groceries I'll still fit it on my lap or on the floor between my feet. I don't know how many times I've gotten on a full bus and the only seat that doesn't have an ass on it is occupied by an oh-so-heavy purse - and a woman who refuses to move it until you start to sit down and she realizes she's gonna be toting around a butt-touched purse if she doesn't move it.

I'm getting really tired of seeing this used as an example of the patriarchy, male privilege, or male oppression of women.

Guys have balls. That makes it very uncomfortable to set with our legs shut. As such, we generally try to sit with out legs spread so that we are comfortable, so that our balls don't get sweaty and smelly and whatnot.

That said? If a guy is doing this on a packed train? This isn't a guy who is using his male privilege and he isn't trying to oppress women. He's an asshole. Because I will sit with my legs spread on buses and trains and whatnot all day long, but if the train starts getting packed and I may be potentially making someone else unable to sit down or I may be making them uncomfortable? I move my legs as much as I can, within reason.

I just want to point something out. I have a toddler boy. I spend a lot of time with other toddlers at playdates etc. Boys and girls sit differently from the minute they learn how to sit in chairs. Social patterning reinforces these behaviors, but they're there from the beginning. And yes, not all boys sit wide and not all girls sit prim, but the boys who sit prim always sit prim and the girls who sit wide always sit wide. Taking up space and appearing large is a natural masculine display. Don't make shit up about balls needing air or whatever. Own it for what it is. Make room when the train gets full, but when it's empty, no apologies needed.
