Are you old enough to remember Bush’s re-election campaign of 2004? If not, then it may be difficult to participate in this thought experiment.

Do you remember the general attitude of the US public towards homosexuals prior to 2004? I mention this date because as anyone who lived through it might recall, the GOP used the idea of legalized gay marriage as a wedge issue to get their base to the polls. At the time it was fairly rare to find your average Democrat favoring it, unless they were particularly young or a gay rights activist. Gays didn’t risk violence to the same degree as they did in the 1950’s, celebrities and a few others could be safe and out of the closet, but society in general didn’t approve of them.

If you’re old enough to remember this time or before it, ask yourself this question. Who was more disliked by the general public: Gay men or lesbians?

P.S. in case anyone is curious, some of my closest friends are gay, and I have always been in favor of marriage equality.
